Bayhaqi 12134 — Picking up a foundling, and that it may not be left

Abu Jamilah (may Allah be pleased with him) found a child abandoned by the road during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he took him. He said: The overseer of my tribe mentioned it, and when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw me, he said: "Perhaps the little cave holds misfortune." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What made you pick up this soul?" He said: I said: "I found it abandoned, so I picked it up." The overseer of my tribe said: "He is a righteous man." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Is that really so?" He said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go, he is free; his wala' (right of clientage) is yours, and his maintenance is on us."
