It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave some property in charity in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it was called Thamgh. It was a garden (of date palms). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have acquired some property which is very precious to me, and I intend to give it in charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give its original property in charity: it is not to be sold, nor gifted, nor inherited, but its fruit is to be spent (in charity)." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave it in charity in the path of Allah, in freeing slaves, and for the needy, the guest, the traveller and relatives, and said: There is no harm if whoever manages it eats from it in a reasonable manner or feeds his friend, without amassing wealth by it.
