Alqamah bin Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him land as an estate. Then he sent Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) with me, that he should give it to me, or have it marked out for me. He said: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let me ride behind you. I said: You cannot be one who rides behind kings. Then he said: Give me your sandals. I said: Walk in the shade of the she-camel. He said: When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, I came to him, and he seated me on the couch. Then he reminded me of this hadith. Simak, the narrator, says: Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wished that I had seated him in front of me.
