Bayhaqi 11447 — Acknowledging rights and making amends for wrongs

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I wrote to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about two women who used to make leather socks. They were talking in the house; one of them came out with blood flowing from her hand and said: This woman injured me, while the other denied it. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote back: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that "the oath is upon the one against whom the claim is made," and he said: "If people were given according to their claims, people would claim the blood and wealth of other people." Summon that woman and recite this verse to her: "Indeed, those who sell the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price, those will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them, nor look at them (with mercy) on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they will have a painful punishment." [Surah Al Imran: 77] When this verse was recited to the women, that woman confessed. When Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) received the news, he was pleased.
