(a) It is narrated from al-Rubayyi' that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his head with the water left over in his hand.
(b) Abdullah bin Dawud and others narrate from al-Thawri, and some of them said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped with the wetness of his hands," as though it means that he (peace and blessings be upon him) took fresh water, poured some of it away, and then wiped his head with the wetness of his hands. Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil was not a hafiz of hadith. The scholars of hadith differ about whether his narrations may be taken as evidence. (c) Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the hadith of Ibn Aqil are not taken as evidence. (d) Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about Ibn Aqil, and he said: "I saw Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ishaq bin Ibrahim and al-Humaydi taking his hadith as evidence, and he is muqarib al-hadith (his hadith is fair)." (e) The narration of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has a weak chain. (f) Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something with this meaning concerning the ritual bath (ghusl), but their chains are weak. There is a full explanation of this in al-Khilafiyyat. (g) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) reports in al-Marasil, through al-Ala' bin Ziyad, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a ritual bath (ghusl), and on his shoulder there was a small dry spot which the water had not reached. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took water from the hair of his head and squeezed it out there on his shoulder, then rubbed it with his hand." This narration is munqati' (broken).
