Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on a military expedition or a journey and night came upon him, he would say: 'Ya ardu, rabbi wa rabbuki Allah. A'udhu billahi min sharriki wa sharri ma fiki wa sharri ma khuliqa fiki wa sharri ma dabba alayki. A'udhu billahi min sharri kulli asadin wa aswad, wa hayyatin wa aqrab, wa min sakini al-balad, wa min sharri walidin wa ma walad' (O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil of what is in you, the evil of what has been created in you, and the evil of what creeps upon you. I seek refuge in Allah from every lion, black serpent, snake and scorpion, from the dwellers of the land, and from the evil of a parent and what he begets.)
