(a) Aban said that Qatadah was asked about tayammum on a journey, and he said: Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "Up to the elbows," and al-Hasan and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i also used to say the same, that is, "Up to the elbows."
(b) It is narrated from Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Up to the elbows." (c) Abu Ishaq said: I mentioned this to Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: How excellent (a way)!
The Shaykh said: This disagreement is in the hadith of Ibn Abza from Ammar, and most of it comes from Salamah bin Kuhayl, to whom doubt occurred. Al-Hakam bin Utaybah is a jurist and a hafiz; he narrated it from Dharr bin Abdullah, from Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman, then he heard it from Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman himself and narrated the hadith without any doubt. Qatadah's narration from Azrah agrees with it. But the hadith that Qatadah narrates from an unnamed narrator from al-Sha'bi is munqati' (broken). Thus this hadith is also established through another chain, about the authenticity of which there is no doubt.
