أَخْبَرَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: "اغْدُ عَالِمًا أَوْ مُتَعَلِّمًا أَوْ مُسْتَمِعًا، وَلَا تَكُنِ الرَّابِعَ فَتَهْلِكَ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Become a scholar, or a learner, or a listener, and do not be the fourth type, lest you be destroyed.
Brief Explanation

In this, the virtue of the scholar (‘alim), the learner (muta‘allim), and the listener (mustami‘) is described, and there is an exhortation not to become the fourth type of person, because there is a danger of destruction in that.
