Hadith 2517

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a military expedition in which Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) himself was also present. They obtained a large number of camels as war booty, so each soldier of that army received twelve or eleven camels, and then one more camel was given as a reward.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2516)

From this hadith, it is understood that a warrior (ghazi) can be given, in addition to his allotted share from the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanīmah), some extra wealth as well. The aforementioned hadith indicates that the commander of the army must have given this reward from the khums (one-fifth portion). This distribution took place during the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained silent upon it, therefore it is a proof (hujjah). Thus, it is permissible to give a warrior something extra beyond his share.
