Hadith 2518

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attacked the enemy’s land, he would give a quarter of the spoils of war as a reward, and when all the people returned (and there was a need for battle again), he would give a third of the spoils of war as a reward.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2517)

When war booty (mal-e-ghanīmah) is obtained, one fifth of it belongs to Allah and His Messenger; the Imam or leader should extract this portion, and the remaining four parts should be distributed among the warriors (mujāhidīn). The Imam has the discretion to allocate, as he wishes, a reward from these remaining four parts to any particular individual or group.

This is the opinion of Imam Ahmad and Ishaq rahimahumullah.

Some jurists have said that if the Imam promises a reward, it should be from the fifth (khums) which is the share of Allah and His Messenger.

Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman rahimahullah writes: After extracting the fifth, when the battle is about to commence, at that time, a quarter of the war booty may be designated as a reward for a particular group that performs acts of bravery. And after returning from battle, if someone fights the enemy again, then he is given a third as a supererogatory (nafl) reward, because he has endured hardship and effort twice.
