أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ: أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "فَادَى رَجُلًا بِرَجُلَيْنِ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) released a man by taking ransom for two men (i.e., he released one disbeliever in exchange for two Muslim prisoners).

From this hadith, it is understood that the exchange of prisoners of war is permissible, and this is the opinion of the majority of scholars. However, according to Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah, exchange is not permissible; in his view, the prisoner should either be killed or enslaved.
