باب الصَّلاَةِ خَلْفَ الْمَقَامِ:Chapter: Praying Behind Maqam Ibrahim

أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ: وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي فِي ثَلَاثٍ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، "لَوْ اتَّخَذْتَ مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى سورة البقرة آية 125".
The Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I agreed with my Lord in three matters. I said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer, then Allah the Exalted revealed this noble verse: «وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى» [بقرة 125/2] meaning, "Take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1886)
From this hadith, the evidence is established for performing two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim after circumambulation (tawaf), which is a Sunnah. If space is not available behind Maqam Ibrahim, then these Sunnah prayers can be performed in any corner of the Sacred Mosque (Haram).
From this hadith, the virtue of the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, is also known. There are three occasions where a thought occurred in his heart and Allah, the Exalted, supported him. Among these occasions and issues, the mention of Maqam Ibrahim is present here. The other two issues are also found in the aforementioned reference of Sahih Bukhari, and they are as follows: Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said: O Messenger of Allah! If only you would command the Mothers of the Believers to observe veiling (hijab).
The verse was revealed: « ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ .....﴾ [الأحزاب : 59]» Translation: "O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks over themselves (i.e., to observe veiling)."
And when the Pure Wives (azwaj mutahharat) made some requests to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he said to his daughter, Sayyidah Hafsah radi Allahu anha: It may be that Allah, the Exalted, will cause you to be divorced, and in your place, grant His Messenger wives better than you.
Accordingly, this noble verse was revealed: «﴿عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَنْ يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ .....﴾ [التحريم : 5]» Translation: "If the Prophet divorces you, his Lord will soon give him, in your place, wives better than you."
And this noble verse was revealed exactly in the words of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu.
