It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would return from a journey during the day after sunrise, then he would go to the mosque, perform two units of prayer, and then converse with the people.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1558)
It is established from this hadith that upon returning from a journey, one should first go to the mosque and perform two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer. Some scholars have restricted this to Hajj and Jihad, but this hadith is general, therefore acting upon this Sunnah is necessary, which in the present era has become neglected. The writer has always seen Samahat al-Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah acting upon this; whenever he returned from a journey, he would first come to the mosque and perform these two units, then proceed to his home. May Allah grant us also the ability to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Ameen.
