Hadith 1331

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then return and lead his own people (the people of his tribe) in prayer. One night, he came and recited Surah Al-Baqarah in the 'Isha prayer. So, a man from among the Ansar came and prayed (it is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that he broke off from the prayer and prayed separately). Then it became known to him that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) had spoken harshly to him, so he complained about him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him): "Are you a cause of tribulation? Are you a cause of tribulation? Are you a cause of tribulation?" («فاتنًا» said or «فتانًا»). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered him to recite only two surahs from the middle-length surahs (Awsat al-Mufassal), that is: «﴿سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى﴾ ، ﴿وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا﴾ ، ﴿وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى﴾ كما فى البخاري». Abu Muhammad Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We hold this view.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1330)

It has been mentioned previously that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) strongly reprimanded Sayyiduna Mu'adh (radi Allahu anhu) for reciting lengthy passages, and said, "There are elderly, weak, and people with needs praying behind you, so you should lead the prayer lightly, keeping them in consideration."

In this narration, there is an emphasis on reciting surahs from the middle of the Mufassal, such as Al-A‘la, Ash-Shams, and Al-Layl, in the ‘Isha prayer.
