Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1753 — people used to do their work themselves, so
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، ثنا قُرَيْشُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ النَّاسُ عُمَّالَ أَنْفُسِهِمْ , فَكَانُوا يَرُوحُونَ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ كَهَيْئَتِهِمْ , فَقِيلَ لَهُمْ : لَوِ اغْتَسَلْتُمْ "
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that people used to do their work themselves, so they would go for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) in that very state. Then they were instructed that if you perform ghusl (ritual bath), it is better.
