«لا طلاق إلا فيما يملك ولا عتق إلا فيما يملك ولا بيع إلا فيما يملك ولا وفاء نذر إلا فيما يملك ولا نذر إلا فيما ابتغي به وجه الله ومن حلف على معصية فلا يمين له ومن حلف على قطيعة رحم فلا يمين له»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Divorce takes effect only in what one owns, freeing a slave takes effect only in what one owns, a sale takes effect only in what one owns, fulfilling a vow applies only in what one owns, and a vow is valid only when the pleasure of Allah is sought by it. Whoever swears an oath to commit a sin, his oath has no standing, and whoever swears an oath to sever ties of kinship, his oath too has no standing."
