"أتاني الليلة ربي تبارك وتعالى في أحسن صورة فقال: يا محمد هل تدري فيم يختصم الملأ الأعلى؟ قلت لا فوضع يده بين كتفي حتى وجدت بردها بين ثديي فعلمت ما في السموات وما في الأرض فقال: يا محمد هل تدري فيم يختصم الملأ الأعلى؟ قلت: نعم في الكفارات والدرجات والكفارات: المكث في المساجد بعد الصلوات والمشي على الأقدام إلى الجماعات وإسباغ الوضوء في المكاره قال: صدقت يا محمد! ومن فعل ذلك عاش بخير ومات بخير وكان من خطيئته كيوم ولدته أمه وقال: يا محمد إذا صليت فقل اللهم إني أسألك فعل الخيرات وترك المنكرات وحب المساكين وأن تغفر لي وترحمني وتتوب علي وإذا أردت بعبادك فتنة فاقبضني إليك غير مفتون والدرجات: إفشاء السلام وإطعام الطعام والصلاة بالليل والناس نيام"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Tonight my Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, came to me in the most beautiful form and said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the angels near to Allah (the Exalted Assembly) are disputing about? I said: No. So Allah Almighty placed His hand between my shoulders until I felt its coolness in my chest, and I came to know whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Then Allah Almighty said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the angels near to Allah are disputing about? I said: Yes, about the expiations (deeds that wipe out sins) and the degrees (deeds that raise one in rank). The expiations are: remaining in the mosques after the prayers, walking on foot to the congregational prayers, and performing ablution thoroughly despite hardship (cold or discomfort). Allah Almighty said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad! Whoever does these things will live in goodness and die in goodness, and he will be as free of his sins as on the day his mother gave birth to him. And Allah Almighty said: O Muhammad! When you have prayed, then make this supplication: O Allah! I ask You for the doing of good deeds, the abandoning of evil deeds, and love for the poor, and that You forgive me, have mercy on me and accept my repentance; and when You intend a trial for Your servants, then take me to Yourself without being put to trial. And the degrees (deeds that raise one in rank) are: spreading the greeting of peace, feeding people, and praying at night while people are asleep."
