«مثل المؤمن الذي يقرأ القرآن كمثل الأترجة ريحها طيب وطعمها طيب ومثل المؤمن الذي لا يقرأ القرآن كمثل التمرة طعمها طيب ولا ريح لها ومثل الفاجر الذي يقرأ القرآن كمثل الريحانة ريحها طيب وطعمها مر ومثل الفاجر الذي لا يقرأ القرآن كمثل الحنظلة طعمها مر ولا ريح لها ومثل الجليس الصالح كمثل صاحب المسك إن لم يصبك منه شيء أصابك من ريحه ومثل جليس السوء كمثل صاحب الكير إن لم يصبك من سواده أصابك من دخانه»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The example of the believer who recites the Qur'an is like a citron (sweet lemon): its fragrance is good and its taste is good. The example of the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date: its taste is good but it has no fragrance. The example of the wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like basil (a fragrant plant): its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. The example of the wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like colocynth (bitter apple): its taste is bitter and it has no fragrance. The example of a righteous companion is like a musk seller: even if you get nothing from him, his fragrance will surely reach you. And the example of an evil companion is like the owner of a furnace: even if its soot does not touch you, its smoke will surely reach you."
