" لما خلق الله آدم مسح ظهره فسقط من ظهره كل نسمة هوخالقها إلى يوم القيامة ثم جعل بين عيني كل إنسان منهم وبيصا من نور ثم عرضهم على آدم فقال: أي رب من هؤلاء؟ قال: هؤلاء ذريتك فرأى رجلا منهم أعجبه نور ما بين عينيه فقال: أي رب من هذا؟ قال: رجل من ذريتك في آخر الأمم يقال له داود قال: أي رب كم عمره؟ قال ستون سنة قال: فزده من عمري أربعين سنة: قال: إذن يكتب ويختم ولا يبدل فلما انقضى عمر آدم جاء ملك الموت فقال: أو لم يبق من عمري أربعون سنة؟ قال: أو لم تعطها ابنك دأود؟ فجحدت ذريته ونسي آدم فنسيت ذريته وخطئ آدم فخطئت ذريته"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When Allah Almighty created Adam, He passed His hand over his back, and every soul He was to create until the Day of Resurrection fell from his back. Then He placed a gleam of light between the eyes of every human being among them, then presented them to Adam. Adam asked: 'O Lord, who are these?' He said: 'These are your descendants.' Adam saw a man among them, the light between whose eyes pleased him greatly, and he asked: 'O Lord, who is this?' He said: 'A man from your descendants, from the last of the nations, who will be called Dawud.' Adam asked: 'O Lord, how long is his life?' He said: 'Sixty years.' Adam said: 'Then add forty years to it from my life.' He said: 'Then this decision will be written and sealed, and it will not be changed.' When Adam's appointed life came to an end, the Angel of Death came. Adam said: 'Do forty years of my life not remain?' The angel said: 'Did you not give them to your son Dawud?' Adam denied it, and so his descendants learned to deny; Adam forgot, and so his descendants became forgetful; and Adam erred, and so his descendants began to err."
