«الذهب بالذهب تبره وعينه والفضة بالفضة تبرها وعينها والبر بالبر مدين بمدين والشعير بالشعير مدين بمدين والتمر بالتمر مدين بمدين والملح بالملح مدين بمدين فمن زاد أو ازداد فقد أربى ولا بأس ببيع الذهب بالفضة والفضة أكثرهما يدا بيد وأما نسيئة فلا ولا بأس ببيع البر بالشعير والشعير أكثرهما يدا بيد وأما نسيئة فلا»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Gold for gold, whether as ore or as coin; silver for silver, whether as ore or as coin; wheat for wheat, two mudds for two mudds; barley for barley, two mudds for two mudds; dates for dates, two mudds for two mudds; and salt for salt, two mudds for two mudds. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in usury (riba). There is no harm in selling gold for silver while the silver is more, provided it is hand to hand (on the spot); on credit it is not permitted. And there is no harm in selling wheat for barley while the barley is more, provided it is hand to hand (on the spot); on credit it is not permitted."
