«إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به فإذا كبر فكبروا وإذا قرأ فأنصتوا وإذا قال {غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا الضَّالِّينَ} فقولوا: آمين وإذا ركع فاركعوا وإذا قال: سمع الله لمن حمده فقولوا: اللهم ربنا ولك الحمد وإذا سجد فاسجدوا وإذا صلى جالسا فصلوا جلوسا»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The imam has been appointed only so that he may be followed. So when he says the takbir, you too say the takbir; when he recites, remain silent; when he says 'Not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who go astray' [Surah al-Fatihah: 7], say: Amin; when he bows, you bow; when he says 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him), then say 'Allahumma rabbana wa lakal-hamd' (O Allah, our Lord, and to You belongs all praise); when he prostrates, you too prostrate; and when he prays sitting, you too pray sitting."
