"إنما أجلكم فيما خلا من الأمم كما بين صلاة العصر إلى مغارب الشمس, وإنما مثلكم ومثل اليهود والنصارى كمثل رجل استأجر أجراء فقال: من يعمل من غدوة إلى نصف النهار على قيراط قيراط؟ فعملت اليهود ثم قال: من يعمل من نصف النهار إلى صلاة العصر على قيراط قيراط؟ فعملت النصارى ثم قال: من يعمل من العصر إلى أن ¤ تغيب الشمس على قيراطين قيراطين؟ فأنتم هم فغضبت اليهود والنصارى وقالوا: ما لنا أكثر عملا وأقل عطاء؟ قال: هل ظلمتكم من حقكم شيئا؟ قالوا: لا. قال: فذلك فضلي أوتيه من أشاء"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Your term (of remaining in the world) compared to the nations that have passed before is only like the time from the Asr prayer until sunset. Indeed, the example of you and of the Jews and Christians is like that of a man who hired some labourers and said: Who will work for me from morning until midday for one qirat (wage) each? So the Jews worked. Then he said: Who will work for me from midday until the Asr prayer for one qirat (wage) each? So the Christians worked. Then he said: Who will work for me from the Asr prayer until sunset for two qirats (wage) each? And you are those (workers). At this the Jews and Christians became angry and said: What is wrong with us that we worked more and received less wage? He (the owner) said: Have I wronged you in any way in giving you your agreed wage? They said: No. Then He (Allah) said: This is My bounty; I give it to whomever I will."
