«أحصوا هلال شعبان لرمضان ولا تخلطوا برمضان إلا أن يوافق ذلك صياما كان يصومه أحدكم, وصوموا لرؤيته وأفطروا لرؤيته فإن غم عليكم فأكملوا العدة ثلاثين يوما فإنها ليست تغمى عليكم العدة»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Keep count of the crescent of Sha'ban for the sake of Ramadan, and do not join (fasts) to Ramadan by fasting a day or two before it, unless that day coincides with a fast which one of you customarily observes. Fast upon sighting it (the crescent) and break the fast (celebrate Eid) upon sighting it. If it is obscured from you by clouds, then complete the count of thirty days, for the count is not hidden from you."
