[إن الله جعل هذه الأهلة مواقيت فإذا رأيتموه فصوموا وإذا رأيتموه فأفطروا فإن غم عليكم فعدوا ثلاثين]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Allah Almighty has made these new moons a means of fixing times. So when you see it (the moon of Ramadan), fast; and when you see it (the moon of Shawwal), end the fast (that is, celebrate Eid). And if the sky is overcast (that is, the moon is not sighted), complete the count of thirty days."
