"إن الله أمر يحيى بن زكريا بخمس كلمات أن يعمل بهن وأن يأمر بني إسرائيل أن يعملوا بهن فكأنه أبطأ بهن فأوحى الله إلى عيسى: إما أن يبلغهن أو تبلغهن فأتاه عيسى فقال له: إنك أمرت بخمس كلمات أن تعمل بهن وتأمر بني إسرائيل أن يعملوا بهن فإما أن تبلغهن وإما أن أبلغهن فقال له: يا روح الله إني أخشى إن سبقتني أن أعذب أو يخسف بي فجمع يحيى بني إسرائيل في بيت المقدس حتى امتلأ المسجد فقعد على الشرفات فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال: إن الله أمرني بخمس كلمات أن أعمل بهن وآمركم أن تعملوا بهن; وأولهن: أن تعبدوا الله ولا تشركوا به شيئا فإن مثل من أشرك بالله ¤ كمثل رجل اشترى عبدا من خالص ماله بذهب أو ورق ثم أسكنه دارا فقال: اعمل وارفع إلي فجعل العبد يعمل ويرفع إلى غير سيده فأيكم يرضى أن يكون عبده كذلك؟ وإن الله خلقكم ورزقكم فاعبدوه ولا تشركوا به شيئا. ¤ وأمركم بالصلاة وإذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فلا تلتفتوا فإن الله عز وجل يقبل بوجهه على عبده ما لم يلتفت. ¤ وأمركم بالصيام ومثل ذلك كمثل رجل معه صرة مسك في عصابة كلهم يجد ريح المسك وإن خلوف فم الصائم أطيب عند الله من ريح المسك. ¤ وأمركم بالصدقة ومثل ذلك كمثل رجل أسره العدو فشدوا يديه ¤ إلى عنقه وقدموه ليضربوا عنقه فقال لهم: هل لكم أن أفتدي نفسي منكم؟ فجعل يفتدي نفسه منهم بالقليل والكثير حتى فك نفسه، وأمركم بذكر الله كثيرا ومثل ذلك كمثل رجل طلبه العدو سراعا في أثره فأتى حصنا حصينا فأحرز نفسه فيه وإن العبد أحصن ما يكون من الشيطان إذا كان في ذكر الله تعالى. وأنا آمركم بخمس أمرني الله بهن: الجماعة والسمع والطاعة والهجرة والجهاد في سبيل الله فإنه من فارق الجماعة قيد شبر فقد خلع ربقة الإسلام من عنقه إلا أن يراجع ومن دعا بدعوة الجاهلية فهو من جثاء جهنم وإن صام وصلى وزعم أنه مسلم فادعوا بدعوة الله التي سماكم بها المسلمين المؤمنين عباد الله"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Allah Almighty commanded Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon them both) with five things: that he himself act upon them and that he command the Children of Israel to act upon them. It seemed that he delayed somewhat in this, so Allah Almighty revealed to Isa (peace be upon him): Either you convey them, or else he (Yahya, peace be upon him) conveys them. So Isa (peace be upon him) came to him and said: You were commanded with five things, to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them; so either you convey them or I will convey them. Yahya (peace be upon him) said to him: O Spirit of Allah! I fear that if you go ahead of me, I will be punished or made to sink into the earth. Then Yahya (peace be upon him) gathered the Children of Israel in Bayt al-Maqdis until the mosque was filled; he sat on a raised place, praised and extolled Allah, and then said: Indeed, Allah has commanded me with five things, that I act upon them and command you to act upon them. The first of them is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, for the example of one who associates partners with Allah is like a man who bought a slave with his own pure wealth, gold or silver, then settled him in a house and said: Work and bring (the earnings) to me. So the slave began to work and take the earnings to someone other than his master. Which of you would be pleased for his slave to be like that? And indeed Allah created you and provided for you, so worship Him alone and do not associate anyone with Him. And He has commanded you to pray, so when you stand for prayer, do not look here and there, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, keeps His attention turned towards His servant as long as he does not look here and there. And He has commanded you to fast; its example is that of a man who has a pouch of musk in the midst of a group, and everyone is sensing the fragrance of the musk; and indeed, the smell of the fasting person's mouth is purer in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk. And He has commanded you to give charity; its example is that of a man whom the enemy has taken captive, tied his hands to his neck and brought forward to kill him, and he says to them: Would you agree to let me ransom my life from you and free myself? Then he ransoms himself from them with little and much until he frees himself from them. And He has commanded you to remember Allah abundantly; its example is that of a man whom the enemy is pursuing swiftly, and he comes to a strong fortress and secures himself within it; and indeed, a servant is most protected from Satan when he is engaged in the remembrance of Allah Almighty. And I command you with five things which Allah has commanded me: al-Jama'ah (holding fast to the community of the Muslims), listening and obeying (the leader), emigration (hijrah), and jihad in the path of Allah. For indeed, whoever leaves the community even by a handspan has removed the collar of Islam from his neck, unless he returns (to the community). And whoever calls with the call of the Days of Ignorance (tribal partisanship and the like) is among those who fall on their knees in Hell, even if he fasts, prays and claims that he is a Muslim. So call with the call given by Allah, who has named you Muslims, believers and servants of Allah."
