«إن الله تعالى إذا أراد رحمة أمة من عباده قبض نبيها قبلها فجعله لها فرطا وسلفا بين يديها وإذا أراد هلكة أمة عذبها ونبيها حي فأهلكها وهو ينظر فأقر عينه بهلكتها حين كذبوه وعصوا أمره»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, when Allah Almighty intends mercy for a nation from among His servants, He takes its Prophet in death before it, and makes him a forerunner and one who goes ahead to prepare for that nation. And when Allah intends the destruction of a nation, He punishes them while their Prophet is alive, so He destroys them before his eyes and cools that Prophet's eyes with their destruction, because they rejected him and disobeyed his command."
