"انطلق ثلاثة رهط ممن كان قبلكم حتى أووا المبيت إلى غار فدخلوه فانحدرت عليهم صخرة من الجبل فسدت عليهم الغار فقالوا: إنه لا ينجيكم من هذه الصخرة إلا أن تدعوا الله بصالح أعمالكم; قال رجل منهم: اللهم كان لي أبوان شيخان كبيران وكنت لا أغبق قبلهما أهلا ولا مالا فنأى بي في طلب شيء يوما فلم ¤ أرح عليهما حتى ناما فحلبت لهما غبوقهما فوجدتهما نائمين فكرهت أن أغبق قبلهما أهلا أو مالا فلبثت والقدح على يدي أنتظر استيقاظهما حتى برق الفجر فاستيقظا فشربا غبوقهما اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك ففرج عنا ما نحن فيه من هذه الصخرة؟ فانفرجت شيئا لا يستطيعون الخروج; وقال الآخر: اللهم كانت لي ابنة عم كانت أحب الناس إلى فأردتها على نفسها فامتنعت مني حتى ألمت بها سنة من السنين فجاءتني فأعطيتها عشرين ومائة دينار على أن تخلي بيني وبين نفسها ففعلت حتى إذا قدرت عليها قالت: لا أحل لك أن تفض الخاتم إلا بحقه فتحرجت من الوقوع عليها فانصرفت عنها وهي أحب الناس إلي وتركت الذهب الذي أعطيتها اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فافرج عنا ما نحن فيه فانفرجت الصخرة غير أنهم لا يستطيعون الخروج منها; وقال الثالث: اللهم استأجرت أجراء فأعطيتهم أجرهم غير رجل واحد ترك الذي له وذهب فثمرت أجره حتى كثرت منه الأموال فجاءني بعد حين فقال: يا عبد الله أدني أجري فقلت له: كل ما ترى من أجرك من الإبل والبقر والغنم والرقيق فقال: يا عبد الله لا تستهزئ بي فقلت: إني لا أستهزئ بك فأخذه كله فاستاقه فلم يترك منه شيئا اللهم فإن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فافرج عنا ما نحن فيه فانفرجت الصخرة فخرجوا يمشون"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Three men from among those who were before you set out on a journey, until they took shelter in a cave to spend the night and entered it. Suddenly a rock fell from the mountain and blocked the mouth of the cave upon them. They said to one another: 'Nothing can save you from this rock except that you call upon Allah by means of your righteous deeds.' One of them said: 'O Allah! I had elderly parents, and I would not give the evening milk to my family or my slaves before them. One day I went far away in search of something, and when I returned they had already fallen asleep. I milked their evening milk for them but found them asleep. I disliked giving milk to my family or my property (slaves) before them, so I kept waiting for them to wake up with the cup of milk in my hand until dawn broke. Then they woke up and drank their milk. O Allah! If I did this solely to seek Your pleasure, then remove from us the distress of this rock.' The rock shifted a little, but they could not get out. The second said: 'O Allah! I had a cousin (my paternal uncle's daughter) who was the most beloved of all people to me. I desired her for evil, but she refused me, until a year of famine befell her and she came to me. I gave her one hundred and twenty dinars on condition that she would be alone with me. She did so, until, when I had gained power over her, she said: "I do not make it lawful for you to break the seal except by its right (marriage)." Hearing this, I refrained from going to her and moved away from her, even though she was the most beloved of people to me, and I also left the gold that I had given her. O Allah! If I did this solely for Your pleasure, then remove this distress of ours.' The rock shifted further, but they still could not get out of it. The third said: 'O Allah! I hired some labourers and gave them their wages, except for one man who left what was due to him and went away. I invested his wages in trade and increased them, until much wealth accumulated from them. After some time he came to me and said: "O servant of Allah! Give me my wages." I said to him: "These camels, cows, goats and slaves that you see are all your wages." He said: "O servant of Allah! Do not mock me." I said: "I am not mocking you." Then he took all of it and drove it away, leaving nothing of it. O Allah! If I did this solely for Your pleasure, then relieve us of this difficulty of ours.' The rock moved away completely, and they all came out walking."
