"أتيت بالبراق وهو دابة أبيض طويل فوق الحمار ودون البغل يضع حافره عند منتهى طرفه فركبته حتى أتيت بيت المقدس فربطته بالحلقة التي تربط بها الأنبياء, ثم دخلت المسجد فصليت فيه ركعتين, ثم خرجت فجاءني جبريل بإناء من خمر وإناء من لبن فاخترت اللبن فقال جبريل: اخترت الفطرة, ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من أنت؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بآدم فرحب بي ودعا لي بخير; ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء الثانية فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من أنت؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بابني الخالة: عيسى بن مريم ويحيى بن زكريا فرحبا بي ودعوا لي بخير, ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء الثالثة فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من أنت؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بيوسف وإذا هو قد أعطي شطر الحسن فرحب بي ودعا لي بخير, ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء الرابعة فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من هذا؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بإدريس فرحب بي ودعا لي بخير قال الله تعالى: {وَرَفَعْنَاهُ مَكَاناً عَلِيّاً} , ¤ ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء الخامسة فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من هذا؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بهارون فرحب بي ودعا لي بخير; ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء السادسة فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من هذا؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بموسى فرحب بي ودعا لي بخير, ثم عرج بنا إلى السماء السابعة فاستفتح جبريل فقيل: من هذا؟ قال: جبريل قيل: ومن معك؟ قال: محمد قيل: وقد بعث إليه؟ قال: قد بعث إليه ففتح لنا فإذا أنا بإبراهيم مسندا ظهره إلى البيت المعمور وإذا هو يدخله كل يوم سبعون ألف ملك لا يعودون إليه, ثم ذهب بي إلى سدرة المنتهى وإذا ورقها كآذان الفيلة وإذا ثمرها كالقلال فلما غشيها من أمر الله ما غشي تغيرت فما أحد من خلق الله يستطيع أن ينعتها من حسنها, فأوحى الله إلي ما أوحى ففرض علي خمسين صلاة في كل يوم وليلة; ¤ فنزلت إلى موسى فقال: ما فرض ربك على أمتك قلت: خمسين صلاة قال: ارجع إلى ربك فسله التخفيف فإن أمتك لا تطيق ذلك فإني قد بلوت بني إسرائيل وخبرتهم فرجعت إلى ربي فقلت: يا رب خفف عن أمتي فحط عني خمسا; ¤ فرجعت إلى موسى فقلت: حط عني خمسا قال: إن أمتك لا يطيقون ذلك فارجع إلى ربك فسله التخفيف, ¤ فلم أزل أرجع بين ربي وبين موسى حتى قال: يا محمد إنهن خمس ¤ صلوات كل يوم وليلة لكل صلاة عشر فذلك خمسون صلاة ومن هم بحسنة فلم يعلمها كتبت له حسنة فإن عملها كتبت له عشرا, ومن هم بسيئة فلم يعملها لم تكتب شيئا فإن عملها كتبت سيئة واحدة; فنزلت حتى انتهيت إلى موسى فأخبرته فقال: ارجع إلى ربك فسله التخفيف فقلت: قد رجعت إلى ربي حتى استحييت منه"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The Buraq was brought to me, and it was a tall white animal, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, which would place its hoof as far as its sight reached. I mounted it until I reached Bayt al-Maqdis, where I tied it to the ring to which the prophets used to tie (their mounts). Then I entered the mosque and prayed two rak'ahs in it. Then, when I came out, Jibril brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk. I chose the milk, and Jibril said: 'You have chosen the fitrah (natural disposition).' Then we were taken up to the heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Adam (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the second heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met the two maternal cousins, Isa bin Maryam and Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon them both); they both welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the third heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Yusuf (peace be upon him), who had been given half of (the world's) beauty; he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the fourth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Idris (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Allah Almighty has said: {And We raised him to a high station.} [Surah Maryam: 57] Then we were taken up to the fifth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Harun (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the sixth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and I met Musa (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the seventh heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and I met Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who was sitting with his back reclining against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur, which seventy thousand angels enter every day and never return to it again. Then I was taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary), and its leaves were like the ears of elephants and its fruits were the size of large earthenware jars. When, by the command of Allah, there covered it what covered it, it changed, so that none of Allah's creation is able to describe its beauty. Then Allah revealed to me what He revealed, and He made fifty prayers obligatory upon me in every day and night. Then I descended to Musa (peace be upon him), and he asked: 'What has your Lord made obligatory upon your Ummah?' I said: 'Fifty prayers.' He said: 'Go back to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction, for your Ummah will not be able to bear that; I have tested the Children of Israel and have experience of them.' So I went back to my Lord and said: 'O my Lord, lighten it for my Ummah,' and He reduced five prayers for me. Then I came back to Musa (peace be upon him) and said: 'Five prayers have been reduced for me.' He said: 'Your Ummah will not be able to bear even that, so go back to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction.' So I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Musa (peace be upon him) until Allah Almighty said: 'O Muhammad, they are five prayers in every day and night, each prayer counting as ten, so that makes fifty prayers. Whoever intends a good deed but is unable to do it, one good deed is recorded for him, and if he does it, ten good deeds are recorded for him; and whoever intends an evil deed and does not do it, nothing is recorded, and if he does it, one evil deed is recorded.' Then I descended until I reached Musa (peace be upon him) and informed him, and he said: 'Go back to your Lord again and ask Him for a reduction.' I said: 'I have gone back to my Lord so many times that I now feel shy before Him.'"

Then we were taken up to the third heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Yusuf (peace be upon him), who had been given half of (the world's) beauty; he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the fourth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'I am Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Idris (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Allah Almighty has said: {And We raised him to a high station.} [Surah Maryam: 57] Then we were taken up to the fifth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and there I met Harun (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the sixth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and I met Musa (peace be upon him); he welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then we were taken up to the seventh heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was asked: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Jibril.' It was asked: 'Who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' It was asked: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, he has been sent for.' So the gate was opened for us, and I met Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who was sitting with his back reclining against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur, which seventy thousand angels enter every day and never return to it again. Whoever intends a good deed but is unable to do it, one good deed is recorded for him, and if he does it, ten good deeds are recorded for him; and whoever intends an evil deed and does not do it, nothing is recorded, and if he does it, one evil deed is recorded.' Then I descended until I reached Musa (peace be upon him) and informed him, and he said: 'Go back to your Lord again and ask Him for a reduction.' I said: 'I have gone back to my Lord so many times that I now feel shy before Him.'"
