«اغزوا باسم الله وفي سبيل الله وقاتلوا من كفر بالله اغزوا ولا تغلوا ولا تغدروا ولا تمثلوا ولا تقتلوا وليدا وإذا لقيت عدوك من المشركين فادعهم إلى ثلاث خصال فأيتهن ما أجابوك فاقبل منهم وكف عنهم: ادعهم إلى الإسلام فإن أجابوك فاقبل منهم وكف عنهم ; ثم ادعهم أن التحول من دارهم إلى دار المهاجرين وأخبرهم أنهم إن فعلوا ذلك فلهم ما للمهاجرين وعليهم ما على المهاجرين فإن أبوا أن يتحولوا منها فأخبرهم أنهم يكونون كأعراب المسلمين يجري عليهم حكم الله الذي يجري على المؤمنين ولا يكون لهم في الغنيمة والفيء شيء إلا أن يجاهدوا مع المسلمين فإن هم أبوا فسلهم الجزية فإن هم أجابوك فاقبل منهم وكف عنهم فإن أبوا فاستعن بالله وقاتلهم وإذا حاصرت أهل حصن وأرادوك أن تجعل لهم ذمة الله وذمة نبيه فلا تجعل لهم ذمة الله ولا ذمة نبيه ولكن اجعل لهم ذمتك وذمة أصحابك فإنكم إن تخفروا ذممكم وذمم أصحابكم أهون من أن تخفروا ذمة الله وذمة رسوله وإذا حاصرت أهل الحصن فأرادوك أن تنزلهم على حكم الله فلا تنزلهم على حكم الله ولكن أنزلهم على حكمك فإنك لا تدري أتصيب حكم الله فيهم أم لا»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah, and fight against whoever disbelieves in Allah. Fight, but do not embezzle from the spoils of war, do not break your covenant, do not mutilate (bodies by cutting off limbs to disfigure them), and do not kill any child. And when you meet your enemies among the polytheists, invite them to three things; whichever of them they accept, accept it from them and refrain (from fighting) them: first, invite them to Islam; if they accept, accept it from them and do not fight them. Then invite them to leave their land and emigrate to the land of the Muhajirun, and tell them that if they do so, they will have the same rights as the Muhajirun and the same obligations as the Muhajirun. If they refuse to emigrate, tell them that they will be like the Bedouin Muslims: the same command of Allah that applies to the believers in general will apply to them, but they will receive nothing from the spoils of war (ghanimah) and the fay' unless they wage jihad together with the Muslims. If they refuse (even to accept Islam), then demand the jizyah (tax) from them; if they agree, accept it from them and refrain from fighting. But if they refuse that as well, then seek the help of Allah and fight them. And when you besiege the people of a fortress and they want you to grant them the protection (covenant and security) of Allah and of His Prophet, do not by any means grant them the protection of Allah and of His Prophet; rather, grant them your own protection and that of your companions, for if the protection given by you or your companions is broken, that is far lighter than your breaking the covenant of Allah and His Messenger. And when you besiege a fortress and they want you to bring them down on the judgement of Allah, do not bring them down on the judgement of Allah, but bring them down on your own judgement, for you do not know whether you will arrive at Allah's (intended) judgement concerning them or not."
