Hadith 42
وحَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الأُمَوِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بُرْدَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَيُّ الإِسْلامِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ : " مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ ، وَيَدِهِ " .
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Musa Ash'ari: I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) which (attribute) of Islam is more excellent. Upon this he remarked: One in which the Muslims are safe, protected from the tongue and hand of (other Muslims). Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jauhari has narrated this hadith with the same words in addition to these. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (may peace and blessings be upon him) was asked as to who amongst the Muslims is better, and the rest of the hadith was narrated like this.
Hadith 100
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ حَمَلَ عَلَيْنَا السِّلَاحَ ، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا " .
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Musa Ash'ari: He who took up arms against us is not of us.
Hadith 104
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْقَنْطَرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُخَيْمِرَةَ حَدَّثَهُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ بْنُ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : وَجِعَ أَبُو مُوسَى وَجَعًا فَغُشِيَ عَلَيْهِ ، وَرَأْسُهُ فِي حَجْرِ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ ، فَصَاحَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ ، فَلَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهَا شَيْئًا ، فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ ، قَالَ : " أَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا بَرِئَ مِنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَرِئَ مِنَ الصَّالِقَةِ ، وَالْحَالِقَةِ ، وَالشَّاقَّةِ " .
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Burda bin Abu Musa that Abu Musa was afflicted with grave pain and he became unconscious and his head was in the lap of a lady of his household. One of the women of his household walled. He (Abu Musa) was unable (because of weakness) to say anything to her. But when he was a bit recovered he said: I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).
Hadith 104
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، وَإِسْحَاق بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُمَيْسٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا صَخْرَةَ يَذْكُرُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ وأبى بردة بن أبي موسى ، قَالَا : أُغْمِيَ عَلَى أَبِي مُوسَى ، وَأَقْبَلَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ أُمُّ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ تَصِيحُ بِرَنَّةٍ ، قَالَا : ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ ، قَالَ : أَلَمْ تَعْلَمِي ، وَكَانَ يُحَدِّثُهَا ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّنْ ، حَلَقَ ، وَسَلَقَ وَخَرَقَ " .
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Burda that Abu Musa fell unconscious and his wife Umm 'Abdullah came there and wailed loudly. When he felt relief he said: Don't you know? -and narrated to her: Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I have no concern with one who shaved her hair, lamented loudly and tore (her clothes in grief).
Hadith 154
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ خُرَاسَانَ ، سَأَلَ الشَّعْبِيَّ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو ، إِنَّ مَنْ قِبَلَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ خُرَاسَانَ ، يَقُولُونَ فِي الرَّجُلِ إِذَا أَعْتَقَ أَمَتَهُ ، ثُمَّ تَزَوَّجَهَا فَهُوَ كَالرَّاكِبِ بَدَنَتَهُ ، فَقَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ بْنُ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " ثَلَاثَةٌ يُؤْتَوْنَ أَجْرَهُمْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ آمَنَ بِنَبِيِّهِ ، وَأَدْرَكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَآمَنَ بِهِ ، وَاتَّبَعَهُ ، وَصَدَّقَهُ فَلَهُ أَجْرَانِ ، وَعَبْدٌ مَمْلُوكٌ أَدَّى حَقَّ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ، وَحَقَّ سَيِّدِهِ فَلَهُ أَجْرَانِ ، وَرَجُلٌ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَمَةٌ فَغَذَّاهَا فَأَحْسَنَ غِذَاءَهَا ، ثُمَّ أَدَّبَهَا فَأَحْسَنَ أَدَبَهَا ، ثُمَّ أَعْتَقَهَا وَتَزَوَّجَهَا ، فَلَهُ أَجْرَانِ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ لِلْخُرَاسَانِيِّ : خُذْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ بِغَيْرِ شَيْءٍ ، فَقَدْ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَرْحَلُ فِيمَا دُونَ هَذَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ .
It is narrated on the authority of Sha'bi that one among the citizens of Khurasan asked him: O Abu! some of the people amongst us who belong to Khurasan say that a person who freed his bondswoman and then married her is like one who rode over a sacrificial animal. Sha'bi said: Abu Burda bin Abi Musa narrated it to me on the authority of his father that verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There are three (classes of persons) who would be given a double reward. One who is amongst the People of the Book and believed in his apostle and (lived) to see the time of Apostle (ﷺ) Muhammad (ﷺ) and affirmed his faith in him and followed him and attested his truth, for him is the double reward; and the slave of the master who discharges all those obligations that he owes to Allah and discharges his duties that he owes to his master, for him there is a double reward. And a man who had a bondswoman and fed her and fed her well, then taught her good manners, and did that well and later on granted her freedom and married her, for him is the double reward. Then Sha'bi said: Accept this hadith without (giving) anything. Formerly a man was (obliged) to travel to Madinah even for a smaller hadith than this.
Hadith 254
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْحَارِثِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ غَيْلَانَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ جَرِيرٍ الْمَعْوَلِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : " دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَطَرَفُ السِّوَاكِ عَلَى لِسَانِهِ " .
Abu Musa reported: I went to the Apostle (ﷺ) and found one end of the tooth-stick upon his tongue (i. e. he was rinsing his mouth).
Hadith 420
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَاشْتَدَّ مَرَضُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ " ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ ، مَتَى يَقُمْ مَقَامَكَ ، لَا يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ ، فَقَالَ : " مُرِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ، فَإِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ " ، قَالَ : فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، حَيَاةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Abu Musa reported: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) became ill and illness became serious he ordered Abu Bakr (RA) to lead the people in prayer. Upon this 'A'isha said: Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr (RA) is a man of tenderly feelings: when he would stand in your place (he would be so much overwhelmed -by grief that) he would not be able to lead the people in prayer. He (the Holy Prophet) said: You order Abu Bakr (RA) to lead the people in prayer, and added: You are like the female companions of Yusuf. So Abu Bakr (RA) led the prayer (during this period of illness) in the life of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) .
Hadith 641
وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأَصْحَابِي الَّذِينَ قَدِمُوا مَعِي فِي السَّفِينَةِ ، نُزُولًا فِي بَقِيعِ بُطْحَانَ ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ ، فَكَانَ يَتَنَاوَبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ ، كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ نَفَرٌ مِنْهُمْ ، قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى : فَوَافَقْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَأَصْحَابِي ، وَلَهُ بَعْضُ الشُّغْلِ فِي أَمْرِهِ ، حَتَّى أَعْتَمَ بِالصَّلَاةِ ، حَتَّى ابْهَارَّ اللَّيْلُ ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ ، قَالَ لِمَنْ حَضَرَهُ عَلَى رِسْلِكُمْ : " أُعْلِمُكُمْ وَأَبْشِرُوا ، أَنَّ مِنْ نِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ ، أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَحَدٌ يُصَلِّي هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ غَيْرُكُمْ " ، أَوَ قَالَ : مَا صَلَّى هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُكُمْ ، لَا نَدْرِي أَيَّ الْكَلِمَتَيْنِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى : فَرَجَعْنَا فَرِحِينَ بِمَا سَمِعْنَا مِنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Abu Musa reported: I and my companions who had sailed along with me in the boat landed with me in the valley of Buthan while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was staying in Madinah. A party of people amongst them went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) every night at the time of the 'Isha' prayer turn by turn. Abu Musa said: (One night) we (I and my companions) went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he was occupied in some matter till there was a delay in prayer so much so that it was the middle of the night. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then came out and led them (Musa's companions) in prayer. And when he had observed his prayer he said to the audience present: Take it easy, I am going to give you information and glad tidings that it is the blessing of Allah upon you for there is none among the people, except you, who prays at this hour (of the night), or he said: None except you observed prayer at this (late) hour. He (i. e. the narrator) said: I am not sure which of these two sentences he actually uttered. Abu Musa, said: We came back happy for what we heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) .
Hadith 662
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ أَعْظَمَ النَّاسِ أَجْرًا فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، أَبْعَدُهُمْ إِلَيْهَا مَمْشًى ، فَأَبْعَدُهُمْ ، وَالَّذِي يَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ ، حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَهَا مَعَ الإِمَامِ ، أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا مِنَ الَّذِي يُصَلِّيهَا ، ثُمَّ يَنَامُ " ، وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي كُرَيْبٍ : حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَهَا مَعَ الإِمَامِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ .
Abu Musa reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The most eminent among human beings (as a recipient of) reward (is one) who lives farthest away, and who has to walk the farthest distance, and he who waits for the prayer to observe it along with the Imam, his reward is greater than one who prays (alone) and then goes to sleep. In the narration of Abu Kuraib (the words are): "(He waits) till he prays along with the Imam in congregation."
Hadith 779
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَثَلُ الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي يُذْكَرُ اللَّهُ فِيهِ ، وَالْبَيْتِ الَّذِي لَا يُذْكَرُ اللَّهُ فِيهِ ، مَثَلُ الْحَيِّ وَالْمَيِّتِ " .
Abu Musa reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: The house in which remembrance of Allah is made and the house in which Allah is not remembered are like the living and the dead.
Hadith 791
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " تَعَاهَدُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ ، لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَلُّتًا مِنَ الإِبِلِ فِي عُقُلِهَا " ، وَلَفْظُ الْحَدِيثِ لِابْنِ بَرَّادٍ .
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mohammad that it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled.
Hadith 793
وحَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا طَلْحَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَبِي مُوسَى : " لَوْ رَأَيْتَنِي وَأَنَا أَسْتَمِعُ لِقِرَاءَتِكَ الْبَارِحَةَ ، لَقَدْ أُوتِيتَ مِزْمَارًا مِنْ مَزَامِيرِ آلِ دَاوُدَ " .
Abu Burda narrated on the authority of Abu Musa that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had said to Abu Musa (RA) : If you were to see me, as I was listening to your recitation (of the Qur'an) yester-night (you would have felt delighted). You are in fact endowed with a sweet voice like that of David himself.
Hadith 853
وحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ مَخْرَمَةَ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَيْلِيُّ ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَخْرَمَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ : أَسَمِعْتَ أَبَاكَ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي شَأْنِ سَاعَةِ الْجُمُعَةِ ؟ قَالَ : قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " هِيَ مَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ الْإِمَامُ إِلَى أَنْ تُقْضَى الصَّلَاةُ " .
Abu Burda bin Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported: 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (RA) said to me: Did you hear anything from your father narrating something from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the time on Friday? I said: Yes, I heard him say from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (these words):" It is between the time when the Imam sits down and the end of the prayer."
Hadith 912
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَامَ فَزِعًا يَخْشَى أَنْ تَكُونَ السَّاعَةُ ، حَتَّى أَتَى الْمَسْجِدَ ، فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي بِأَطْوَلِ قِيَامٍ وَرُكُوعٍ وَسُجُودٍ ، مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُهُ فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ الَّتِي يُرْسِلُ اللَّهُ لَا تَكُونُ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُرْسِلُهَا يُخَوِّفُ بِهَا عِبَادَهُ ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا ، فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى ذِكْرِهِ وَدُعَائِهِ وَاسْتِغْفَارِهِ " . وَفِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ الْعَلَاءِ : " كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ " ، وَقَالَ : " يُخَوِّفُ عِبَادَهُ " .
Abu Musa reported: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) . He stood in great anxiety fearing that it might be the Doomsday, till he came to the mosque. He stood up to pray with prolonged qiyam, ruku', and prostration which I never saw him doing in prayer; and then he said: These are the signs which Allah sends, not on account of the death of anyone or life of anyone, but Allah sends them to frighten thereby His servants. So when you see any such thing, hasten to remember Him, supplicate Him and beg pardon from Him, and in the narration transmitted by Ibn 'Ala the words are:" The sun eclipsed"."" He frightens His servants."
Hadith 927
حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ ، عَنْ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا أُصِيبَ عُمَرُ ، جَعَلَ صُهَيْبٌ ، يَقُولُ : وَا أَخَاهْ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ : يَا صُهَيْبُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ لَيُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ الْحَيِّ " .
Abu Burda narrated on the authority of his father that when 'Umar was wounded Suhaib uttered (loudly in lamentation): O brother! Upon this 'Umar said: Suhaib, did you not know that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:" The dead is punished because of the lamentation of the living"?
Hadith 927
وحَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ أَبُو يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : لَمَّا أُصِيبَ عُمَرُ أَقْبَلَ صُهَيْبٌ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى عُمَرَ ، فَقَامَ بِحِيَالِهِ يَبْكِي ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : عَلَامَ تَبْكِي أَعَلَيَّ تَبْكِي ؟ قَالَ : إِي وَاللَّهِ لَعَلَيْكَ أَبْكِي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، قَالَ : وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ يُبْكَى عَلَيْهِ يُعَذَّبُ " . قَالَ : فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِمُوسَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ ، فَقَالَ : كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ ، تَقُولُ : إِنَّمَا كَانَ أُولَئِكَ الْيَهُودَ .
Abu Musa reported that when 'Umar was wounded, there came Suhaib from his house and went to 'Umar and stood by his side, and began to wail. Upon this 'Umar said: What are you weeping for? Are you weeping for me? He said: By Allah, it is for you that I weep, O Commander of the believers. He said: By Allah, you already know that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had said: He who is lamented upon is punished. I made a mention of it to Musa bin Talha, and he said that 'A'isha told that it concerned the Jews (only).
Hadith 1008
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ " ، قِيلَ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ ؟ ، قَالَ : يَعْتَمِلُ بِيَدَيْهِ ، فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ ، قَالَ : قِيلَ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ ؟ ، قَالَ : يُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ " ، قَالَ : قِيلَ لَهُ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ ؟ ، قَالَ : يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ أَوِ الْخَيْرِ ، قَالَ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ؟ ، قَالَ : يُمْسِكُ عَنِ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ " ،
Sa'id bin Abu Burda reported on the authority of his grandfather that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: Giving of Sadaqa is essential for every Muslim. It was said (to him): What do you say of him who does not find (the means) to do so? He said: Let him work with both his hands, thus doing benefit to himself and give Sadaqa. It was said to him: What about him who does not have (the means) to do so? He said: Then let him assist the needy, the aggrieved. It was said: What do you say of one who cannot even do this? He said: Then he should enjoin what is reputable or what is good. He said: What about him if he cannot do that? He (the Holy Prophet) said: He should then abstain from evil, for verily that is Sadaqa on his behalf.
Hadith 1012
وحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَيَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَطُوفُ الرَّجُلُ فِيهِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ ، ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُ أَحَدًا يَأْخُذُهَا مِنْهُ ، وَيُرَى الرَّجُلُ الْوَاحِدُ يَتْبَعُهُ أَرْبَعُونَ امْرَأَةً ، يَلُذْنَ بِهِ مِنْ قِلَّةِ الرِّجَالِ وَكَثْرَةِ النِّسَاءِ " ، وَفِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ بَرَّادٍ : " وَتَرَى الرَّجُلَ " .
Abu Musa reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: There would come a time for the people when a person would roam about with Sadaqa of gold, but he would find no one to accept it from him. And a man would be seen followed by forty women seeking refuge with him on account of the scarcity of males and abundance of females.
Hadith 1023
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو عَامِرٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَامِرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا بُرَيْدٌ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْخَازِنَ الْمُسْلِمَ الْأَمِينَ الَّذِي يُنْفِذُ ، وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ : يُعْطِي مَا أُمِرَ بِهِ فَيُعْطِيهِ كَامِلًا مُوَفَّرًا ، طَيِّبَةً بِهِ نَفْسُهُ ، فَيَدْفَعُهُ إِلَى الَّذِي أُمِرَ لَهُ بِهِ أَحَدُ الْمُتَصَدِّقَيْنِ " .
Abu Musa reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: The honest Muslim trustee who spends (sometimes he said "who gives") what he is commanded to do and he gives that in full with his heart overflowing with cheerfulness and he gives it to one to whom he is ordered, he is one of the givers of charity.
Hadith 154
وحدثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي " الَّذِي يُعْتِقُ جَارِيَتَهُ ، ثُمَّ يَتَزَوَّجُهَا ، لَهُ أَجْرَانِ " .
Abu Musa reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said about one who emancipated a slave woman, and then married her, that for him there are two rewards.
Hadith 1649
حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِخَلَفٍ ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْحَارِثِيُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ غَيْلَانَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " وَاللَّهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ وَمَا عِنْدِي مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ " ، قَالَ : فَلَبِثْنَا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِإِبِلٍ فَأَمَرَ لَنَا بِثَلَاثِ ذَوْدٍ غُرِّ الذُّرَى ، فَلَمَّا انْطَلَقْنَا قُلْنَا ، أَوَ قَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ لَا يُبَارِكُ اللَّهُ لَنَا أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ ، فَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يَحْمِلَنَا ، ثُمَّ حَمَلَنَا فَأَتَوْهُ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ ، فَقَالَ : مَا أَنَا حَمَلْتُكُمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَمَلَكُمْ ، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا أَحْلِفُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، ثُمَّ أَرَى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا كَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَأَتَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ " .
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported: I came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) along with a group of Ash'arites requesting to give us a mount. He (the Holy Prophet) said: By Allah, I cannot provide you with a mount, and there is nothing with me which I should give you as a ride. He (the narrator) said: We stayed there as long as Allah willed. Then there were brought to him (to the Holy Prophet) camels. He (the Holy Prophet) then ordered to give us three white humped camels, We started and said (or some of us said to the others): Allah will not bless us. We came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) begging him to provide us with riding camels. He swore that he could not provide us with a mount, but later on he provided us with that. They (some of the Prophet's Companions) came and informed him about this (rankling of theirs), whereupon he said: It was not I who provided you with a mount, but Allah has provided you with that. So far as I am concerned, by Allah, if He so wills, I would not swear, but if, later on, I would see better than it, I (would break the vow) and expiate it and do that which is better.
Hadith 1649
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ وَتَقَارَبَا فِي اللَّفْظِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : " أَرْسَلَنِي أَصْحَابِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْأَلُهُ لَهُمُ الْحُمْلَانَ إِذْ هُمْ مَعَهُ فِي جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ وَهِيَ غَزْوَةُ تَبُوكَ فَقُلْتُ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ أَصْحَابِي أَرْسَلُونِي إِلَيْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : وَاللَّهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ ، وَوَافَقْتُهُ وَهُوَ غَضْبَانُ وَلَا أَشْعُرُ ، فَرَجَعْتُ حَزِينًا مِنْ مَنْعِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَمِنْ مَخَافَةِ أَنْ يَكُونَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ وَجَدَ فِي نَفْسِهِ عَلَيَّ ، فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَصْحَابِي فَأَخْبَرْتُهُمُ الَّذِي ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ إِلَّا سُوَيْعَةً إِذْ سَمِعْتُ بِلَالًا يُنَادِي أَيْ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسٍ ، فَأَجَبْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : أَجِبْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْعُوكَ ، فَلَمَّا أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : خُذْ هَذَيْنِ الْقَرِينَيْنِ ، وَهَذَيْنِ الْقَرِينَيْنِ ، وَهَذَيْنِ الْقَرِينَيْنِ لِسِتَّةِ أَبْعِرَةٍ ابْتَاعَهُنَّ حِينَئِذٍ مِنْ سَعْدٍ ، فَانْطَلِقْ بِهِنَّ إِلَى أَصْحَابِكَ فَقُلْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ، أَوَ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ فَارْكَبُوهُنَّ ، قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى : فَانْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى أَصْحَابِي بِهِنَّ ، فَقُلْتُ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ ، وَلَكِنْ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَدَعُكُمْ حَتَّى يَنْطَلِقَ مَعِي بَعْضُكُمْ إِلَى مَنْ سَمِعَ مَقَالَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ سَأَلْتُهُ لَكُمْ وَمَنْعَهُ فِي أَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ ، ثُمَّ إِعْطَاءَهُ إِيَّايَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَا تَظُنُّوا أَنِّي حَدَّثْتُكُمْ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَقُلْهُ ، فَقَالُوا لِي : وَاللَّهِ إِنَّكَ عِنْدَنَا لَمُصَدَّقٌ وَلَنَفْعَلَنَّ مَا أَحْبَبْتَ ، فَانْطَلَقَ أَبُو مُوسَى بِنَفَرٍ مِنْهُمْ حَتَّى أَتَوْا الَّذِينَ سَمِعُوا ، قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَنْعَهُ إِيَّاهُمْ ، ثُمَّ إِعْطَاءَهُمْ بَعْدُ فَحَدَّثُوهُمْ بِمَا حَدَّثَهُمْ بِهِ أَبُو مُوسَى سَوَاءً " .
Abu Musa reported: My friends sent me to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asking him to provide them with mounts as they were going along with him in jaish al-'Usrah (the army of destitutes or of meagre means or army setting out during the hard times and that is the occasion of the expedition of Tabuk) I said: Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) , my friends have sent me to you so that you may provide them with mounts. He (the Holy Prophet) said: By Allah, I cannot provide you with anything to ride. And it so happened that he was at that time much perturbed. I little knew of it, so I came back with a heavy heart on account of the refusal of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , and the fear that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) might have some feelings against me. I returned to my friends and informed them about what Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said. I had hardly stayed for a little that I heard Bilal (RA) calling: 'Abdullah bin Qais (RA) . I responded to his call. He said: Hasten to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , he is calling you. When I came to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) he said: Take this pair, this pair, and this pair (i. e. six camels which he had bought from Sa'd), and take them to your friends and say: Verily Allah (or he said: Verily Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has provided you with these animals. So ride upon them. Abu Musa said: I went along with them to my friends and said: Verily Allah's messenger (ﷺ) has provided you with these animals for riding; but by Allah, I shall not leave you until some of you go along with me to him who had heard the talk of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) when I asked him for you, and his refusal for the first time, and then his granting them to me subsequently; so you should not think that I narrated to you something which he did not say. They said to me: By Allah, in our opinion you are certainly truthful, and we would do as you like. So Abu Musa went along with some of the men from them until they came to those who had heard the words of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and his refusal to (provide) them with (animals); and subsequently his granting (the animals) to them; and they narrated to them exactly as Abu Musa had narrated to them.
Hadith 1732
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا بَعَثَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فِي بَعْضِ أَمْرِهِ ، قَالَ : " بَشِّرُوا وَلَا تُنَفِّرُوا وَيَسِّرُوا وَلَا تُعَسِّرُوا " .
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Musa that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) deputed any of his Companions on a mission, he would say: Give tidings (to the people); do not create (in their minds) aversion (towards religion); show them leniency and do not be hard upon them.
Hadith 1733
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ : أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَهُ وَمُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، فَقَالَ : " يَسِّرَا وَلَا تُعَسِّرَا ، وَبَشِّرَا وَلَا تُنَفِّرَا ، وَتَطَاوَعَا وَلَا تَخْتَلِفَا " ,
It has also been narrated by Sa'd bin Abu Burda through his father through his grandfather that the Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah (ﷺ) sent him and Mu'adh (on a mission) to the Yemen, and said (by way of advising them): Show leniency (to the people); don't be hard upon them; give them glad tidings (of Divine favours in this world and the Hereafter); and do not create aversion. Work in collaboration and don't be divided.
Hadith 1733
وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو . ح وحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَابْنُ أَبِي خَلَفٍ ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ ، وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ وَتَطَاوَعَا وَلَا تَخْتَلِفَا .

Hadith 1816
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي عَامِرٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : " خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزَاةٍ ، وَنَحْنُ سِتَّةُ نَفَرٍ بَيْنَنَا بَعِيرٌ نَعْتَقِبُهُ ، قَالَ : فَنَقِبَتْ أَقْدَامُنَا ، فَنَقِبَتْ قَدَمَايَ وَسَقَطَتْ أَظْفَارِي ، فَكُنَّا نَلُفُّ عَلَى أَرْجُلِنَا الْخِرَقَ ، فَسُمِّيَتْ غَزْوَةَ ذَاتِ الرِّقَاعِ " ، لِمَا كُنَّا نُعَصِّبُ عَلَى أَرْجُلِنَا مِنَ الْخِرَقِ ، قَالَ أَبُو بُرْدَةَ : فَحَدَّثَ أَبُو مُوسَى بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ، ثُمَّ كَرِهَ ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : كَأَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَكُونَ شَيْئًا مِنْ عَمَلِهِ أَفْشَاهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ : وَزَادَنِي غَيْرُ بُرَيْدٍ وَاللَّهُ يُجْزِي بِهِ .
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Musa (Ash'ari) who said: We set out on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . We were six in number and had (with us) only one camel which we rode turn by turn. Our feet were injured. My feet were so badly injured that my nails dropped off. We covered our feet with rags, so this expedition was called Dhat-ur-Riqa' (i. e. the expedition of rags) because we bandaged our feet with rags (on that day). Abu Burda said: Abu Musa narrated this tradition, and then disliked repeating it as he did not want to give any publicity to what he did in a noble cause Abu Usama said: Narrators other than Abu Buraida have added to the version of the words: "God will reward it."
Hadith 1733
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : " دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ مِنْ بَنِي عَمِّي ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُ الرَّجُلَيْنِ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَمِّرْنَا عَلَى بَعْضِ مَا وَلَّاكَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ : فَقَالَ : إِنَّا وَاللَّهِ لَا نُوَلِّي عَلَى هَذَا الْعَمَلِ أَحَدًا سَأَلَهُ وَلَا أَحَدًا حَرَصَ عَلَيْهِ " .
It has been narrated by Abu Musa who said: Two of my cousins and I entered the apartment of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) . One of them said: Messenger of Allah, appoint us rulers of some lands that the Almighty and Glorious God has entrusted to thy care. The other also said something similar. He said: We do not appoint to this position one who asks for it nor anyone who is covetous for the same.
Hadith 1733
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ حَاتِمٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى : أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعِي رَجُلَانِ مِنْ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ أَحَدُهُمَا ، عَنْ يَمِينِي وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ يَسَارِي ، فَكِلَاهُمَا سَأَلَ الْعَمَلَ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَاكُ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا تَقُولُ يَا أَبَا مُوسَى أَوْ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسٍ ؟ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا أَطْلَعَانِي عَلَى مَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمَا وَمَا شَعَرْتُ أَنَّهُمَا يَطْلُبَانِ الْعَمَلَ ، قَالَ وَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى سِوَاكِهِ تَحْتَ شَفَتِهِ وَقَدْ قَلَصَتْ ، فَقَالَ : لَنْ أَوْ لَا نَسْتَعْمِلُ عَلَى عَمَلِنَا مَنْ أَرَادَهُ وَلَكِنْ اذْهَبْ أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا مُوسَى أَوْ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسٍ ، فَبَعَثَهُ عَلَى الْيَمَنِ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : انْزِلْ وَأَلْقَى لَهُ وِسَادَةً ، وَإِذَا رَجُلٌ عِنْدَهُ مُوثَقٌ ، قَالَ : مَا هَذَا ؟ ، قَالَ : هَذَا كَانَ يَهُودِيًّا ، فَأَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ رَاجَعَ دِينَهُ دِينَ السَّوْءِ ، فَتَهَوَّدَ ، قَالَ : لَا أَجْلِسُ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ قَضَاءُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ، فَقَالَ : اجْلِسْ نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : لَا أَجْلِسُ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ قَضَاءُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُتِلَ ، ثُمَّ تَذَاكَرَا الْقِيَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا مُعَاذٌ : أَمَّا أَنَا فَأَنَامُ وَأَقُومُ وَأَرْجُو فِي نَوْمَتِي مَا أَرْجُو فِي قَوْمَتِي " .
It has been reported on the authority of Abu Musa who said: I went to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) and with me were two men from the Ash'ari tribe. One of them was on my right hand and the other on my left. Both of them made a request for a position (of authority) while the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) was brushing his teeth with a tooth-stick. He said (to me): Abu Musa (or 'Abdullah bin Qais (RA) ), what do you say (about the request they have made)? I said: By God Who sent thee on thy mission with truth, they did not disclose to me what they had in their minds, and I did not know that they would ask for a position. The narrator says (while recalling this hadith): I visualise as if I were looking at the miswak of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) between his lips. He (the Holy Prophet) said: We shall not or shall never appoint to the public offices (in our State) those who with to have them, but you may go, Abu Musa (or'Abdullah bin Qais (RA) ) (to take up your assignment). He sent him to Yemen as governor. then he sent Mu'adh bin jabal in his wake (to help him in the discharge of duties). When Mu'adh reached the camp of Abu Musa, the latter (received him and) said: Please get yourself down; and he spread for him a mattress, while there was a man bound hand and foot as a prisoner. Mu'adh said: Who is this? Abu Musa said: He was a Jew. He embraced Islam. Then he reverted to his false religion and became a Jew. Mu'adh said: I won't sit until he is killed according to the decree of Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) (in this case). Abu Musa said: Be seated. It will be done. He said: I won't sit unless he is killed in accordance with the decree of Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) . He repeated these words thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered him (to be killed) and he was kilied. Then the two talked of standing in prayer at night. One of them, i. e. Mu'adh, said: I sleep (for a part of the night) and stand in prayer (for a part) and I hope that I shall get the same reward for steeping as I shall get for standing (in prayer).
Hadith 1733
وحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِقُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَمُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ شَرَابًا يُصْنَعُ بِأَرْضِنَا يُقَالُ لَهُ الْمِزْرُ مِنَ الشَّعِيرِ ، وَشَرَابٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْبِتْعُ مِنَ الْعَسَلِ ، فَقَالَ : " كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ " .
Abu Musa reported: Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) sent me and Mu'adh bin Jabal to Yemen. I said: Allah's Messenger, there is prepared in our land a wine out of barley which is known as Mizr (beer of our times) and a wine from honey which is known as Bit, (are these also forbidden? ), whereupon he said: Every intoxicant is forbidden.
Hadith 1733
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو ، سَمِعَهُ مِنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَهُ وَمُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا : " بَشِّرَا وَيَسِّرَا وَعَلِّمَا وَلَا تُنَفِّرَا ، وَأُرَاهُ قَالَ : وَتَطَاوَعَا ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا وَلَّى رَجَعَ أَبُو مُوسَى ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ لَهُمْ شَرَابًا مِنَ الْعَسَلِ يُطْبَخُ حَتَّى يَعْقِدَ وَالْمِزْرُ يُصْنَعُ مِنَ الشَّعِيرِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كُلُّ مَا أَسْكَرَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فَهُوَ حَرَامٌ " .
Abu Burda reported on the authority of his grandfather that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent him and Mu'adh bin Jabal to Yemen and said to them: Give good tidings to the (people) and make things easy (for them), teach (them), and do not repel (them); and I think he also said: Cooperate cheerfully with each other. When he (the Holy Prophet) turned his back, Abu Musa returned to him and said: Allah's Messenger, they (the people of Yemen) have a drink which is (made) from honey and which is prepared by cooking it until it coagulates, and Mizr is prepared from barley, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Every intoxicant that detains you from prayer is forbidden.
Hadith 2001
وحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، فَقَالَ : " ادْعُوَا النَّاسَ وَبَشِّرَا وَلَا تُنَفِّرَا وَيَسِّرَا وَلَا تُعَسِّرَا " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَفْتِنَا فِي شَرَابَيْنِ كُنَّا نَصْنَعُهُمَا بِالْيَمَنِ الْبِتْعُ ، وَهُوَ مِنَ الْعَسَلِ يُنْبَذُ حَتَّى يَشْتَدَّ وَالْمِزْرُ ، وَهُوَ مِنَ الذُّرَةِ وَالشَّعِيرِ يُنْبَذُ حَتَّى يَشْتَدَّ ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ أُعْطِيَ جَوَامِعَ الْكَلِمِ بِخَوَاتِمِهِ ، فَقَالَ : " أَنْهَى عَنْ كُلِّ مُسْكِرٍ أَسْكَرَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ " .
Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent me and Mu'adh to Yemen saying: Call people (to the path of righteousness) and give good tidings to the (people), and do not repel them, make things easy for them and do not make things difficult. I (Burda) said: Allah's Messenger, give us a religious verdict about two kinds of drinks which we prepare in Yemen. One is Bit' which is prepared from honey; it is a fermented Nabidh and is strong and turns into wine, and (the second is) Mizr which is prepared from millet and barley. Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , who had been gifted with the most eloquent and pithy expressions, said: I forbid you from every intoxicant that keeps you away from prayer.
Hadith 2016
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْأَشْعَثِيُّ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ، وَأَبُو عَامِرٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي عَامِرٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قَالَ : احْتَرَقَ بَيْتٌ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ بِالْمَدِينَة مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلَمَّا حُدِّثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَأْنِهِمْ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذِهِ النَّارَ إِنَّمَا هِيَ عَدُوٌّ لَكُمْ ، فَإِذَا نِمْتُمْ فَأَطْفِئُوهَا عَنْكُمْ " .
Abu Musa reported that a house was burnt down in Madinah during the night over its inhabitants. When their matter was reported to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , he said; This fire is an enemy of yours. So when you go to sleep, extinguish it.
Hadith 2062
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا بُرَيْدٌ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الْمُؤْمِنُ يَأْكُلُ فِي مِعًى وَاحِدٍ وَالْكَافِرُ يَأْكُلُ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَمْعَاءٍ " .
Abu Musa reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A believer eats in one intestine, whereas a non-believer eats in seven intestines.
Hadith 2080
حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، قال : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ ، فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا إِزَارًا غَلِيظًا مِمَّا يُصْنَعُ بِالْيَمَنِ وَكِسَاءً مِنَ الَّتِي يُسَمُّونَهَا الْمُلَبَّدَةَ ، قَالَ : " فَأَقْسَمَتْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُبِضَ فِي هَذَيْنِ الثَّوْبَيْنِ " .
Abu Burda reported: I visited A'isha and she brought out for us the coarse lower garfnent (of Allah's Messenger) made in Yemen and clothes made out of Mulabbada cloth, and she swore in the name of Allah that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) died in these two clothes.
Hadith 2080
حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، وَيَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ ، قَالَ ابْنُ حُجْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، قال : " أَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا عَائِشَةُ إِزَارًا وَكِسَاءً مُلَبَّدًا ، فَقَالَتْ : فِي هَذَا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ : فِي حَدِيثِهِ إِزَارًا غَلِيظًا " .
Abu Burda reported that A'isha brought out for us the lower garment and the upper garment made of the Mulabbada cloth and said: It was in these (clothes) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) died. Ibn Hatim (one of the narrators) in his narration Wd: The lower garment of coarse cloth.
Hadith 2078
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ ابْنِ إِدْرِيسَ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي كُرَيْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، قال : سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ كُلَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : " نَهَانِي يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ أَجْعَلَ خَاتَمِي فِي هَذِهِ أَوِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا ، لَمْ يَدْرِ عَاصِمٌ فِي أَيِّ الثِّنْتَيْنِ " ، " وَنَهَانِي عَنْ لُبْسِ الْقَسِّيِّ ، وَعَنْ جُلُوسٍ عَلَى الْمَيَاثِرِ " ، قَالَ : فَأَمَّا الْقَسِّيِّ فَثِيَابٌ مُضَلَّعَةٌ يُؤْتَى بِهَا مِنْ مِصْرَ وَالشَّامِ فِيهَا شِبْهُ كَذَا ، وَأَمَّا الْمَيَاثِرُ فَشَيْءٌ كَانَتْ تَجْعَلُهُ النِّسَاءُ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ عَلَى الرَّحْلِ كَالْقَطَائِفِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ .
Ali reported: He the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) , forbade me that I should wear my ring in this (forefinger) or in that near it. 'Asim (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: He did not remember which of the two (fingers) he pointed out; and he forbade to wear Qassi material (silk garments), and to sit on the silk saddle cloth, and he said: As regards Qassi, it is a variegated garment which was brought from Egypt and Syria which had figures upon it, and as regards Mayathir, it is something which women prepared for their husbands as red cloths for their saddles.
Hadith 2078
وحدثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ ، عَنْ ابْنٍ لَأَبِي مُوسَى ، قال : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا ، فَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عن النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ .
A hadith like this has been reported on the authority of 'Ali through a different chain of transmitters.
Hadith 2078
وحدثنا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ ، قال : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بُرْدَةَ ، قال : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، قال : نَهَى أَوْ نَهَانِي يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ .
'Ali bin Abu Talib reported that he (Allah's Apostle) (ﷺ) forbade or forbade me the rest of the hadith is the same.
Hadith 2095
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ يَحْيَي ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، قال : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : " نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ أَتَخَتَّمَ فِي إِصْبَعِي هَذِهِ أَوْ هَذِهِ ، قَالَ : فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى الْوُسْطَى وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا " .
'Ali reported: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade me that I should wear a ring in this and that finger of mine, and he pointed to the middle finger and the next one.
Hadith 2145
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، قال : " وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ ، فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَمَّاهُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَحَنَّكَهُ بِتَمْرَةٍ " .
Abu Musa reported: A child was born in my house and I brought him to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) (may peace be upod him) and he gave him the name of Ibrahim and he rubbed his palate with dates.
