إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ فَلْيَشُدَّهُ عَلَى حِقْوِهِ وَلَا تَشْتَمِلُوا كَاشْتِمَالِ الْيَهُودِ

أخبرنا الحسن بن يعقوب العَدْل، حدثنا يحيى بن أبي طالب، حدثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، حدثنا سعيد بن أبي عَرُوبة، عن أيوب، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "إذا صلَّى أحدُكم في ثوبٍ واحدٍ فليَشُدَّه على حَقْوِه، ولا تَشتَمِلُوا كاشتمالِ اليهود" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجا كيفيَّة الصلاة في الثوب الواحد.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever prays in a single garment, let him tie it around his waist, and do not wrap yourselves (without tying it) as the Jews do."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record the manner of praying in a single garment.

Grading: (1) Its chain is qawi (strong).
Technical note: Ayyub refers to Ibn Tamimah al-Sakhtiyani.
وأخرجه ابن خزيمة (769) عن الحسن بن محمد الزعفراني، عن عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah (769) through al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-Za'farani from Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata'.
وأخرجه ابن خزيمة أيضًا (766) و (769)، والبيهقي 2/ 236 من طريقين عن سعيد بن أبي عروبة، به.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah (766, 769) and al-Bayhaqi (2/236) by two routes from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah.
وأخرجه بنحوه أبو داود (635) من طريق حماد بن زيد، عن أيوب، به. وفيه شكٌّ في رفعه أو وقفه من حديث ابن عمر عن أبيه عمر من قوله.
Reference / Source: It was narrated with similar meaning by Abu Dawud (635) through Hammad bin Zayd from Ayyub, but in it there is doubt as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf, i.e. whether it is the statement of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself.
وأخرجه كذلك أحمد 10/ (6356) من طريق ابن جريج عن نافع، به.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 10/ (6356) through Ibn Jurayj from Nafi'.
وروى نحوه سالم بن عبد الله بن عمر عن أبيه فجعله عن عمر موقوفًا، أخرجه الطحاوي في "شرح معاني الآثار" 1/ 378 ورجَّحه.
Grading: Salim bin Abd Allah narrated it from his father as mawquf on 'Umar (i.e. his own practice); al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (1/378) and preferred this version.
والحَقْو: موضع شدِّ الإزار، وهو الخاصرة.
(Clarification): "Al-haqw" is the place where the waist-wrapper is tied, i.e. the waist or hip area.
