Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 9017

It is narrated from Abu Qilabah; he said: A group of Qur'an reciters (scholars of the Qur'an) came to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and with him was a black woman wearing a Qatawani cloak (of coarse dark cloth); she had neither any fine clothing nor any perfume. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you know what this woman is saying? She tells me to go to Iraq, whereas if I went to Iraq, the people would say: 'This is a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him),' and they would lavish worldly wealth and goods upon us. And indeed my beloved friend Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined upon me that the bridge over Hell is a slippery place, and our load is light, so perhaps we will be saved from it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), provided that Abu Qilabah heard it from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This report is sahih, but this chain is "shadh" because it mentions "Matar" (as the narrator) from Abu Qilabah; Musa bin al-Hasan bin 'Abbad, though there is no harm in him, as al-Daraqutni said, was contradicted in this narration.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" 4/ 222, Ahmad in "al-Musnad" 35/ (21416), and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad", as found in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (1087), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 161; all three of them from 'Affan bin Muslim, from Hammam, from Qatadah, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Asma' al-Rahabi: that he went in to Abu Dharr, and he mentioned the hadith.
Grading: This chain is muttasil (connected) and sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah is 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi, and Abu Asma' al-Rahabi is 'Amr bin Marthad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part of it is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in a long report with al-Bukhari (7439) and Muslim (183).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, which passed with the author at number (3465).
Note / Clarification: "Al-majasid": the plural of mujsad, which is a garment dyed with saffron or safflower.
Note / Clarification: "Al-khaluq": a perfume compounded of saffron and other things.
Note / Clarification: "دَحْضٌ مَزَلَّةٌ": a place where feet do not stay firm, but slip and slide.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) He (Abu Qilabah) did not hear from him (Abu Dharr); between the two of them in it is "Abu Asma'", as has passed.
