Mustadrak al-Hakim 8999 — A woman who gives charity to her husband

It is narrated from Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) (the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)), through her nephew, that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O assembly of women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewellery, for on the Day of Resurrection you will be the majority of the people of Hell." Sayyidah Zaynab said: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of little wealth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) inspired great awe, so I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah: "Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf: will my spending on my husband and on the orphans in my care count as charity on my part?" Abu al-Abbas said to us: Then he mentioned the complete hadith.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) (with the previous chain) that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O assembly of women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewellery, for on the Day of Resurrection you will be the majority of the people of Hell." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of little wealth, so I said to him: "Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf: will my spending on my husband and on the orphans in my care count as charity on my part?" She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) inspired great awe, so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "Go and ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) yourself." She said: So I set off and reached his (peace and blessings be upon him) door, and there was a woman of the Ansar there as well whose question was the same as mine. She said: Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to us and we said to him: "Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on our behalf: will our spending on our husbands and on the orphans in our care count as charity on our part?" She said: So Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Zaynab is at the door." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which Zaynab?" He said: "Zaynab the wife of Abdullah, and Zaynab, a woman of the Ansar. They are asking you about spending on their husbands and on the orphans in their care: will this spending of theirs count as charity on their part?" She said: Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to us and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For both of them there are two rewards: the reward for (upholding) kinship and the reward for charity."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording, and Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) alone recorded it in abridged form.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscript (K) this has been corrupted into "'Umar" and in (M) into "'Amr", while this chain has dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B). What we have established is the correct form, from the sources of the narrator's biography.

Grading: (4) This hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan on account of Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar, who is "corroborated" (mutaba'), and those above him are trustworthy (thiqat).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Abu Mu'awiyah, who is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, made an error in its chain, saying: "'Amr bin al-Harith from the nephew of Zaynab", whereas the correct version is that 'Amr bin al-Harith is himself the nephew of Zaynab (not an intermediary). Al-Tirmidhi drew attention to this right after hadith (636).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, Shaqiq is Ibn Salamah Abu Wa'il al-Asadi, and 'Abd Allah, the husband of Zaynab, is 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. See its takhrij in the one that follows.
