Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8916

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection the earth will be spread out for the majesty of the Most Merciful. Then no human being will have any place except where his feet are. Then I will be called first of all, and I will fall down in prostration. Then I will be given permission, so I will stand and say: O my Lord, this one - pointing to Jibril (peace be upon him), who will be on the right of the Most Merciful, and by Allah, Jibril will never have seen Him before that - informed me that You had sent him to me (as a Messenger)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And Jibril will be silent, not speaking at all, until Allah Almighty says: He spoke the truth. Then I will be given permission to intercede, and I will say: O my Lord, these servants of Yours worshipped You in the far corners of the earth. So that is the 'Praiseworthy Station' (al-Maqam al-Mahmud)."
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, while Yunus bin Yazid and Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it from al-Zuhri as mursal.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have (the words) "'ibaduka 'abduka", whereas here the correct text ("'ibaduka 'abaduka") has been established from the source works of the takhrij. Ibn Kathir says in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/ 421): "In my view the meaning of the words of the hadith "'ibaduka 'abaduka fi al-ard" is that they will be standing at the edges of the earth, i.e. all people, believer and disbeliever alike, will be gathered on a single plain."

Grading: Its chain is weak because of "inconsistency" (idtirab).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration there is disagreement over Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri: it has been given sometimes as connected and sometimes as mursal, sometimes as marfu' and sometimes as mawquf. We have not found this narration as a musnad (connected) hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim). Ibrahim bin Hamzah al-Zubayri is "alone" in mentioning Jabir in it. Ibrahim himself is "saduq" (truthful) and acceptable, except that he did not have that (level of) expertise in hadith; this was said by Abu Hatim al-Razi, as quoted from him by his son in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/ 95).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim (bin Hamzah) was contradicted in this chain. Thus it was narrated by Muhammad bin Ja'far al-Warkani in al-Harith bin Abi Usamah's "Musnad" (1131 - Bughyat al-Bahith) (and via him by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 3/ 145), by Muhammad bin Khalid bin 'Athmah in al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (298), and by Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Khalid in Abu Zakariyya bin Mandah's "al-Amali" (13).
Details of the narration: These three narrators narrate it from Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri (Ibn 'Athmah added Salih bin Kaysan in the chain), from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Ali bin al-Husayn (Zayn al-'Abidin), who said: "A man from among the people of knowledge informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said" (and then he mentioned the hadith).
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi's chain up to Ibn 'Athmah has weakness, while the other two chains up to Ibrahim bin Sa'd are "jayyid" (good).
