It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! The Hour will not be established until indecency and miserliness become widespread, the trustworthy person is regarded as a traitor and the traitor is regarded as trustworthy, and the 'wu'ul' perish while the 'tuhut' prevail." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! What are the wu'ul and the tuhut? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wu'ul are the honourable and noble class of people, and the tuhut are those who were beneath people's feet (obscure and lowly), of whom no mention used to be made."

Grading: This hadith is hasan, but there is some weakness in its chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Abi Uways is not a very strong narrator, though he is taken into account in corroborating chains and supporting reports. He is corroborated in this hadith, but by another route from Abu Hurayrah. Zufar bin 'Abd al-Rahman alone narrates from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Walibah, and Ibn Abi Uways alone narrates from Zufar. However, al-Bukhari and Abu Hatim al-Razi said of Zufar that he is 'mustaqim al-hadith' (sound in hadith), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". As for Ibn Walibah, they said nothing about him; only Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Sa'id bin Jubayr's hearing from Abu Hurayrah is not established according to Yahya bin Ma'in, whereas Ibn Hibban said in his "Sahih" that he heard from Abu Hurayrah at the age of ten. Ibn Ma'in's view is sounder and better established, and nothing is found in the chains that supports Ibn Hibban's claim. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in his "Sahih" (6844) by way of Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari, from Isma'il bin Abi Uways, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated in similar form by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (al-Kuna) [9/59], al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (3933) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (748) by way of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Muhammad bin al-Harith (who is Ibn Sufyan al-Qurashi al-Makhzumi) informed me, from Abu 'Alqamah, the mawla of Banu Hashim, that he heard Abu Hurayrah… (and he mentioned the hadith). Except that he made the explanation of 'al-tuhut' and 'al-wu'ul' a statement of Abu Hurayrah (mawquf). Grading: This chain is hasan on account of Muhammad bin al-Harith; a group narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
