It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty loves a servant, He protects him from the world (and its pollutions), just as one of you protects his sick person from water (so that it does not harm him)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and the practical explanation of this hadith lies in the incident which Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(23622). Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its narrators are, overall, thiqah (trustworthy). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain of Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah from Mahmud bin Labid there is disagreement over the name of the Companion: some said Qatadah bin al-Nu'man, some Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (as coming later at number 7654), some Rafi' bin Khadij and some Uqbah bin Rafi'. Some also narrated it from Mahmud bin Labid as "mursal", which does no harm, because Mahmud is a junior Companion. We have set out all these routes in detail under hadith (23622) of the "Musnad Ahmad". Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it (669) by way of al-Abbas bin Abd al-Azim, from Muhammad bin Jahdam, with this same chain. Details of the narration: This hadith will come again with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8054) by way of Muhammad bin Jahdam, and at number (8455) by way of Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi; both of them narrate from Isma'il bin Ja'far. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ali bin Hujr contradicted them (al-Tirmidhi 2036 M) and narrated it by way of Isma'il bin Ja'far, from Amr, from Asim, from Mahmud bin Labid directly as "mursal", i.e. he did not mention any Companion between Mahmud and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Tirmidhi says that Mahmud bin Labid lived in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) as a young boy. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it 39/ (23622) by way of Sulayman bin Bilal, from Amr bin Abi Amr, likewise from the hadith of Mahmud bin Labid. Grading: Abu Hatim, in "al-Ilal" (1820), preferred that the correct route is the one in which Mahmud bin Labid narrates directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Important point: In manuscript (Z) this word is corrupted to "wa-shuyukh".
