It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever feeds his Muslim brother bread until he is full, and gives him water to drink until his thirst is quenched, Allah will distance him from the fire of Hell by seven trenches, and the distance between two trenches is a journey of five hundred years."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is talif (extremely weak and unreliable). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator is Raja' bin Abi 'Ata' al-Misri, about whom Imam Ibn Hibban said in "al-Majruhin" 1/30 that he narrates fabricated (mawdu') reports from the Egyptians, and that it is not permissible to use him as proof under any circumstances. After mentioning this very hadith, he said that this is nothing of the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Imam al-Hakim himself wrote in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sahih" (60) that Raja' bin Abi 'Ata' is a shaykh of the Egyptians who narrates fabricated reports. Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Lisan al-Mizan" 3/466: I do not know how to reconcile these two statements of Imam al-Hakim (i.e. declaring this chain sahih here, and declaring it weak in his book 'al-Madkhal')! Reference / Source: This narration was transmitted by Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" pp. 426-427, Ya'qub al-Fasawi in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 2/527, al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (637), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (324), and Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14719), "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (6518) and his own "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (159). Also, Ibn Shahin in "al-Targhib fi Fada'il al-A'mal" (373), Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3096) and (3097), Qawwam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (399) and (2085), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 18/92-93 recorded it through various routes from Idris bin Yahya al-Khawlani, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tabarani said in "al-Awsat" that this hadith is narrated from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) only with this chain, and that Idris bin Yahya is alone in it. Important point: We say: that is what al-Tabarani said, but Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" mentioned 'Abd al-Malik bin Maslamah together with Idris (as a corroborator).
