Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7297

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the People of the Suffah, that he said: Three days passed over us (in hunger). The custom was that whoever left the mosque would take two or three men by the hand, according to his means, and feed them. He said: I was among those who could not get food for three days and three nights. Then at the time of Isha I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I went to him and asked him to recite Surah Saba' to me. He kept reciting until he reached his house. I hoped he would invite me to eat, but he recited up to the door of the house, stopped there and completed the rest of the surah, then went inside and left me. Then I approached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and did the same with him (but the result was the same). When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the whole story. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his slave-girl: "Is there anything to eat?" She replied: Yes, one loaf of bread and a little ghee. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called for it, then broke the bread into pieces with his blessed hand, mixed the ghee into it and made it into tharid. Then he said: "Go and call ten men, you being the tenth of them." I called ten men. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down," and the large bowl was placed in front (of us). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat in the name of Allah (saying Bismillah); eat from its sides and do not eat from the top (middle), for blessing descends from the top." So we ate until we were full, and the bowl remained just as full, as if we had only drawn lines in it with our fingers. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took it from us, set it right and said: "Call ten more men." The narrator mentioned that in this way he (peace and blessings be upon him) called ten men at a time three times and fed them, and food was still left over.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word established in the text is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis", and that is correct, while in the manuscripts the word "min" (from) was written in its place.

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Khalid bin Yazid bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Malik has been declared weak by most of the scholars. This hadith is narrated from Wathilah through several routes, but there is weakness in all of them, and there is also disagreement in the text.
Important point: Although this chain is weak, the command to eat from the sides of the dish is established by the previous "sahih" hadith. Ahmad also narrated an abridged portion of it (16006) via Rabi'ah bin Yazid from Wathilah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Majah (3276) through the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Qasimah from Wathilah, in which only eating from the side is mentioned, in abridged form.
