Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 723

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit and said three times: "By the One in whose hand is my soul!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, and every one of us began to weep in grief because of this oath of his (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any servant who performs the five prayers, fasts Ramadan and avoids the seven major sins, the gates of Paradise will be opened for him on the Day of Resurrection, until they clang against one another." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your evil deeds" [Surah al-Nisa: 31].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words "that Nu'aym al-Mujmir narrated it to him" had dropped out of our manuscript copies; we have restored them from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" and from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 10/187, where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text.

Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All of its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) and well known, except Suhayb the mawla of the Atwariyyun, from whom only Nu'aym al-Mujmir narrated; however, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", no criticism of him is reported from al-Bukhari or Ibn Abi Hatim, and Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban graded this report sahih. Ibn Abi Hilal refers to Sa'id bin Abi Hilal.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1748) recorded it through Harmalah bin Yahya, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (2230) recorded it by way of Khalid bin Yazid al-Misri, from Sa'id bin Abi Hilal. This narration will come later by this same route under number (2980).
