It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Make me the leader of some place. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are weak (in this matter), and it is a trust, and on the Day of Resurrection it will be a cause of disgrace and regret."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
It has also been said that Yahya bin Sa'id narrated this from Abu Dharr through Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this (particular) chain the intermediary between al-Harith bin Yazid and Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) is not mentioned, whereas in Sahih Muslim and other books this intermediary is mentioned. Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi (485), Ibn Sa'd (4/217), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/265) and Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in "al-Amali" (1503) narrated it through routes of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari with this same chain. Grading: As with the author, in these sources too this narration is reported as "munqati'" (with a break in the chain). Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1825), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (57) and al-Bayhaqi (10/95) narrated it via al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Bakr bin Amr, from al-Harith bin Yazid al-Hadrami, from Abd al-Rahman bin Hujayrah, from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). Grading: This chain is "hasan" and connected, provided that Ibn Hujayrah's hearing from Abu Dharr is established. Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam narrated it in "al-Amwal" (7) via Umar bin Tariq al-Misri, and Imam Ahmad (35/21513) via Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab; both of them from "Ibn Lahi'ah" (Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah), from al-Harith bin Yazid, who said: I heard Ibn Hujayrah say: "Someone who heard Abu Dharr told me." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Lahi'ah is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory), and this narration is also not through any of his early students who heard from him before his books were burned; so on the basis of this (weak) narration we cannot establish a defect ('illah) in the chain of Sahih Muslim. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari (7148), whose wording is: "You will be eager for leadership, and it will be a cause of regret on the Day of Resurrection; how good it is as a wet-nurse (at the start), and how bad it is as a weaner (in the end)."
