Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts the name is written here as "Hammad", whereas we have recorded the correct name in light of the other sources and the books of narrators (rijal).
Grading: Its chain is very weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from the narrator Ma'qil bin Malik (al-Bahili al-Basri), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Imam al-Azdi called him 'matruk', but al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this statement of al-Azdi mistaken in "al-Taqrib".
Important point: Imam al-Dhahabi called him 'thiqah' in "al-Kashif" (5556), but in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" he made an oversight and called him 'da'if'. In our research he is 'saduq' (truthful) and 'hasan al-hadith', especially as he has also been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for his shaykh al-Haytham bin Jammaz, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal said about him: he was 'munkar al-hadith' and his hadith was abandoned. Imam al-Nasa'i called him 'matruk' in "al-Du'afa'" (609). Ibn Ma'in, Abu Hatim, Abu Zur'ah and al-Daraqutni also declared him weak. Imam al-'Uqayli says: the hadith of al-Haytham bin Jammaz al-Hanafi is not preserved. Imam al-Dhahabi stated explicitly in "al-Talkhis" that al-Haytham is 'matruk'.
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli narrated it in "al-Du'afa'" (1909), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (2537), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (2/333) and Ibn Hajar in "al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah" (1408) through various routes with the chain of Ma'qil bin Malik.
Details of the narration: The wording of the hadith is: "Love of Quraysh is faith and hatred of them is disbelief; love of the Arabs is faith and hatred of them is disbelief. Whoever loves the Arabs has loved me, and whoever hates the Arabs has hated me."
Important point: Imam al-Tabarani says that only al-Haytham narrated it from Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani, and according to Abu Nu'aym it is 'gharib' as a narration of Thabit from Anas, in which al-Haytham bin Jammaz is alone.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar narrated it in his "Musnad" (6997) through the chain of Sa'id bin Abd Allah from al-Haytham bin Jammaz.
Grading: Imam al-Bazzar says: We do not know anyone who narrated it from Thabit other than al-Haytham; however, al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far narrated something similar.
General principle: Al-Hasan and al-Haytham are both narrators who cannot be used as proof when they are alone in narrating a hadith (with no one else supporting them).
Reference / Source: Isma'il al-Saffar narrated it at (575), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/144), through the chain of Abu Isra'il Isma'il bin Khalifah from Ali bin Zayd (bin Jud'an) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu'.
Grading: Its chain is very weak, because it is a continuous series of weak narrators (musalsal bi al-du'afa').
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1495) through the chain of Ibn Abi Layla from Adi bin Thabit from al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Love of the Arabs is faith and hatred of them is hypocrisy."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bayhaqi says that this narration came thus, but the 'preserved' narration with the chain of Shu'bah from Adi bin Thabit from al-Bara' (al-Bukhari 3783, Muslim 75) is about the Ansar, whereas this text about the 'Arabs' is known only through the route of al-Haytham bin Jammaz from Thabit from Anas.
Grading: Its chain is 'dark' (muzlim), because it contains several unknown and weak narrators.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic it is also narrated as marfu' from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) (al-Daraqutni in al-Afrad), with the wording: "Love of the Arabs is faith and hatred of them is hypocrisy."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain is the narrator 'Mawra' bin Jubayr', whose biography we did not find. Apart from this, he narrated two other hadiths on which signs of fabrication are evident; one of them is in Ibn Shahin's "al-Targhib" and the other in "Mashyakhat Abi Tahir".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (13/13831) as marfu' through the chain of Sahl bin Amir from Abbad bin al-Rabi' from al-A'mash from Habib bin Abi Thabit from Ibn Umar.
Grading: Its chain is utterly 'talif' (ruined/worthless).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hatim al-Razi accused the narrator Sahl bin Amir of fabricating hadith (al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil 4/202), and Imam al-Bukhari declared him 'munkar al-hadith'.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A marfu' narration from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) was reported by Ibn Asakir (30/144) and Ibn Hajar: "Love of Abu Bakr and Umar is faith and hatred of them is disbelief, and love of the Arabs is faith," and so on.
Grading: Its chain is also 'talif'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it, Ali bin al-Hasan al-Shami is 'matruk' and was accused by Imam al-Daraqutni, and Khulayd bin Da'laj is a 'da'if' narrator.
Reference / Source: The narration from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was reported by Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "Zawa'id al-Musnad" (2/614) through the chain of Isma'il bin Ayyash from Zayd bin Jabirah: "None hates the Arabs except a hypocrite."
Grading: The chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Zayd bin Jabirah al-Madani is 'matruk al-hadith', and Isma'il bin Ayyash is weak when he narrates from people other than those of his own land (the people of Syria), and this narration is of that kind.
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (3/203) with this same chain, but he made it part of the 'Musnad of Abu Rafi'' via Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi' from his father (Abu Rafi') from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: The marfu' narration from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is in Imam al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (11312): "Hatred of Banu Hashim and the Ansar is disbelief, and hatred of the Arabs is hypocrisy."
Grading: Its chain is 'talif' (utterly worthless).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain there is more than one 'muttaham' narrator (accused of lying).
Reference / Source: The narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was reported by Abu al-Shaykh in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi Asbahan" (4/273) and through him by Abu Nu'aym in "Akhbar Asbahan" (2/340), with the wording: "Love the Arabs and wish for their survival and well-being, for their well-being is light in Islam, and their destruction and corruption is darkness in Islam."
Grading: The chain is extremely weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is a continuous series of unknown and weak narrators; moreover, the chain is munqati' (broken) between Ata' bin Abi Maymunah and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
