أخبرنا أبو محمد الحسن بن محمد المِهْرجاني، حدثنا عبد العزيز بن معاوية، حدثنا أبو سفيان زياد بن سهل الحارثي، حدثنا عُمارة بن مِهْران المِعْوَلي، حدثنا عمرو بن دِينار، عن سالم بن عبد الله، عن ابن عمر قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "لمَّا خلَقَ اللهُ الخَلْقَ اختارَ العربَ، ثم اختارَ من العرب قريشًا، ثم اختارَ من قريشٍ بني هاشم، ثم اختارَني من بني هاشم، فأنا خِيرةٌ من خِيرةٍ" (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah created the creation, He chose the Arabs; then from the Arabs He chose Quraysh; then from Quraysh He selected Banu Hashim; then from Banu Hashim He selected me. So I am the best of the best."

(2) إسناده محتمل للتحسين، زياد بن سهل الحارثي لم نقف له على ترجمة سوى ما قاله هارون بن سفيان المستملي المعروف بالدِّيك، من أنه كان ثقةً بصريًا، كما في "حديث أبي الفضل الزهري" ص 407، و تاريخ بغداد 16/ 36، وبقية رجاله ثقات غير عبد العزيز بن معاوية، فصدوق.
Grading: Its chain can possibly be rated 'hasan'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We did not find a biography of the narrator Ziyad bin Sahl al-Harithi anywhere except the statement of Harun bin Sufyan al-Mustamli (known as al-Dik), who declared him "a trustworthy Basran", as mentioned in "Hadith Abi al-Fadl al-Zuhri" (p. 407) and "Tarikh Baghdad" (16/36).
Important point: All the remaining narrators of the chain are trustworthy, except Abd al-Aziz bin Mu'awiyah, who is 'saduq' (truthful).
وأخرجه ابن المغازلي في "مناقب علي" (151) من طريق محمد بن يونس الكُديمي، عن زياد بن سهل الحارثي، بهذا الإسناد. وتحرَّف فيه ابن مهران إلى: ابن ميمون. والكديمي ضعيف جدًّا.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Maghazili narrated it in "Manaqib Ali" (151) through the chain of Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi from Ziyad bin Sahl al-Harithi.
Note / Clarification: In this narration the name "Ibn Mihran" has been distorted into "Ibn Maymun".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'al-Kudaymi' (Muhammad bin Yunus) is very weak.

ويشهد له حديث واثلة بن الأسقع عند مسلم (2276) مرفوعًا: "إنَّ الله اصطفى كِنانةَ من ولد إسماعيل، واصطفَى قريشًا من كِنانة، واصطفَى من قريش بني هاشم، واصطفاني من بني هاشم".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated as marfu' in Sahih Muslim (2276): "Allah chose 'Kinanah' from the descendants of Isma'il, chose 'Quraysh' from Kinanah, chose 'Banu Hashim' from Quraysh, and chose me (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) from Banu Hashim."
