Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I am the most knowledgeable of people about the time of this prayer, the Isha prayer; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray it when the moon set on the third night.
This chain is sahih (authentic); although there is a slight difference in the narrators' accounts, the original narration is established.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, even though there is some variation in its chain, as the author (al-Hakim) will mention later; all of its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu Bishr" here refers to Ja'far bin Iyas Abu Wahshiyyah. Reference / Source: Ahmad 30/(18377) recorded it through Hushaym (bin Bashir) with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (1522) recorded it by way of Raqabah bin Masqalah, from Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Iyas. Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "li-suqut al-qamar al-thalithah" mean the time at which the moon sets on the third night of every lunar month. Important point: This time varies from month to month, because the time at which the crescent (new moon) appears differs. For a valuable detailed scholarly discussion of this matter, see Shaykh Ahmad Shakir's (may Allah have mercy on him) annotation on hadith (166) of "Sunan al-Tirmidhi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With the author the name appears here as "Bishr" (without a ya'), whereas the correct name is "Bashir" (with a ya'). Ibn Hibban stated explicitly in "al-Thiqat" 6/99 that whoever called him "Bishr bin Thabit" without a ya' has erred.
