It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah wrote a (secret) letter to the people of Makkah, and Allah Almighty informed His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of it. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) after the letter. They caught up with a woman riding a camel and took the letter out of one of the braids of her hair. Then they brought it to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was read out to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Hatib and asked: "O Hatib, did you write this letter?" He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What led you to do this?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I am sincere to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), but I was a stranger among the people of Makkah, and my family was living among them. I feared for them, so I wrote a letter that could not harm Allah and His Messenger in any way, and I hoped it might bring some benefit to my family. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I drew my sword and said: O Messenger of Allah, permit me to strike off his neck, for he has committed disbelief. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Khattab, how do you know? Perhaps Allah Almighty has looked upon this band, the people of Badr, and said: Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you?!"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these words. They only agreed on the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi' from Sayyiduna Ali, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me and al-Zubayr to "Rawdat Khakh", but its wording differs from this.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts "fa-stakhraja" (dual form) is written, whereas we have established the text according to the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, as found in the al-Mayman edition.
Note / Clarification: In the other sources the word is "anta" (you), and this seems more appropriate.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (i.e. sahih on the strength of other supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports because of the narrator Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, who has also been corroborated. Important point: "Abu Zumayl" in the chain is Simak bin al-Walid al-Hanafi. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bazzar (197) and Abu Ya'la (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" 3756/1), and by way of him al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 1/ (174), and by al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (4436), by various routes from Umar bin Yunus al-Yamami, with this chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of al-Diya' the mention of "Umar" has dropped out. Reference / Source: It was narrated in full and in abridged form by Ya'qub bin Shaybah in "Musnad Umar" pp. 54-55, al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (2647), al-Qati'i in "Juz' al-Alf Dinar" (255) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi 1/ (175-177) by way of Abu Hudhayfah Musa bin Mas'ud, from Ikrimah bin Ammar, with this chain. (4702). Note / Clarification: This narration has already appeared from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) at the end of a long hadith under number (4702). Note / Clarification: This narration has also appeared from Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah under number (5393), where we mentioned its supporting reports. (7144). Details of the narration: This narration will come later in abridged form from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) under number (7144).
Reference / Source: This narration is in al-Bukhari (3007, 4274, 4890) and Muslim (2494) with these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me, al-Zubayr and al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the author (al-Hakim) did not mention the name of al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him). Details of the narration: In the narration of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (al-Bukhari 3983, 6259) the words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me, Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi and al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam, and all of us were horsemen."
