Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7074

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Umm Nubayh bint al-Hajjaj (who was the mother of Abdullah bin Amr) used to send gifts to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and treat him (peace and blessings be upon him) with great affection and kindness. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit her and asked: "O Umm Abdullah! How are you?" She said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you (peace and blessings be upon him), O Messenger of Allah! I am well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "And how is Abdullah?" She said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you (peace and blessings be upon him); he too is well, but Abdullah is a man who has completely cut himself off from the world. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How so?" She said: He has made sleep forbidden for himself, so he does not sleep, nor does he ever break his fast (he fasts continuously); he has made meat forbidden for himself, so he does not taste meat; and he does not even fulfil the right of his wife. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is he?" She said: He has just gone out and will soon be back. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When he comes to you, keep him here for me." Before long Abdullah arrived, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Indeed, your own self has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you."
Mention of Sahlah bint Suhayl (wife of Abu Hudhayfah bin Utbah).

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) The name occurs thus in the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", but no narrator with this lineage exists in any source. The well-known name is 'Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah bin Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Hatib al-Jumahi, and he is the narrator from whom Yazid bin Harun narrates, as in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil", "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" and others. Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/ 428) called him the brother of Salih, but at the beginning of the biography placed him among "the descendants of Qudamah bin Maz'un", which is a difficulty, because Hatib al-Jumahi is a different Companion. However, in the biography of Salih (4/ 288) al-Bukhari made clear that their grandmother was "'A'ishah bint Qudamah bin Maz'un", from which it is understood that the attribution to Qudamah bin Maz'un is through the grandmother. And Allah knows best.

Grading: (1) With this wording this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi is weak, and about 'Umar bin Shu'ayb Imam al-Daraqutni said that he falls into "wahm" (error).
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in his "Tarikh" (31/ 276-277) via Abu al-'Abbas al-Asamm, from al-Hasan bin Mukram, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (7/ 413), al-Harith in his "Musnad" (Bughyat al-Bahith: 756), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (805), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7977), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tali Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 1/ 158-159, Qawam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "Siyar al-Salaf al-Salihin" pp. 503-504, and al-Rafi'i in "al-Tadwin fi Akhbar Qazwin" 3/ 248-249, via various routes from Yazid bin Harun.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Abi Uways (who is not very strong) contradicted Yazid bin Harun. He narrated it from 'Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi that he heard it from 'Amr bin Shu'ayb, and afterwards memorised it from his father, and (Isma'il said) I had heard it from him, I and my father together; he said: 'Amr bin Shu'ayb narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather, from his great-grandfather Abdullah bin 'Amr (i.e. from the Musnad of Abdullah bin 'Amr). Ibn al-Sunni also narrated it thus in "'Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (187), as did Abu Nu'aym (7978), and it has passed earlier with the author in another wording at no. (6373).
Grading: This is a sahih narration.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/ 6867), al-Bukhari (1975, 5199, 6134), Muslim (1159/ 182), al-Nasa'i (2712) and (2935) and Ibn Hibban (3571) narrated it via Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, that Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Abdullah! Have I not been told that you fast all day and stand in prayer all night?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so. Fast and break your fast, stand in prayer and sleep; for your body has a right over you, your eye has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you. It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month, for every good deed is rewarded tenfold, so that will be equal to fasting perpetually." But I was hard on myself, so it was made hard for me. I said: I have strength for more than this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast the fast of Allah's Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him), and do not exceed it." I asked: What was the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him)? He said: "Half of the time (fasting one day and breaking the fast the next)." In his old age Abdullah bin 'Amr used to say: "Would that I had accepted the concession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!"
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith has many routes from Abdullah bin 'Amr, both long and short. Imam Ahmad mentioned them in his "Musnad" under hadith no. (6477), and Imam Muslim in detail in his "Sahih" (1159).

Grading: (1) The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but there was disagreement over Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari in it, as passed at hadith no. (2725). 'Amrah bint 'Abd al-Rahman is not known to have heard from Sahlah bint Suhayl, so it appears that 'Amrah narrated it from Sahlah as "mursal", especially since al-Layth bin Sa'd was contradicted by Yazid bin Harun and Sulayman bin Bilal, both of whom narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id, from 'Amrah, as "mursal" (as clarified at no. 5072).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muttalib bin Shu'ayb contradicted Ibn Wahb (al-Tamhid: 8/ 258-259). He narrated it from al-Layth, from Ibn al-Had (Yazid bin Abdullah), via Yahya bin Sa'id, from 'Amrah, from the wife of Abu Hudhayfah (Sahlah), that she mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that Salim, the mawla of Abu Hudhayfah, used to come in to her; and 'Amrah claimed that he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her to suckle him (Salim), so she suckled Salim while he was a grown man who had taken part in the Battle of Badr. In this route "Ibn al-Had" is added between al-Layth and Yahya, and the last part of the narration is in the form of a "mursal".
