It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Abdullah bint Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: By Allah! We were saddling up to set out for the land of Abyssinia, and Amir (my husband) had gone out on some errand, when Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came and stood by me, while he was still a polytheist; we used to face severe afflictions and harshness from him. He asked: O Umm Abdullah! Is it departure now? I said: Yes, by Allah! We will go out into Allah's earth. You people have caused us great suffering and inflicted great oppression upon us, until now Allah has made a way (of deliverance) for us. (Hearing this) Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah be your companion and helper. I saw in him a tenderness that I had never seen before. Then he turned away and left, and I think that the news of our departure had saddened him. She related: Then Amir returned from his errand, and I said: O Abu Abdullah! If only you had seen Umar just now, his tenderness and his grief for us. Amir said: Do you have any hope of his accepting Islam? I said: Yes. Amir, seeing his severity and harshness (against Islam), said in despair: That man will not accept Islam until the donkey of al-Khattab accepts Islam.
An account of Fatimah bint al-Khattab bin Nufayl (may Allah be pleased with her), the sister of Sayyiduna Umar.

Grading: (2) Its chain may possibly be graded hasan. There is disagreement about 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith: 'Ali bin al-Madini, Ahmad and al-Nasa'i called him weak, while Ibn Sa'd, al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah. Ibn Ma'in once said: "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him), and once said he is "salih". Abu Hatim said: He is a "shaykh". Technical note / Defect ('illah): And his shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abdullah was given a biography by al-Bukhari (6/ 12 and 13) and by Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (5/ 385 and 386) as two separate men, although they are one and the same, and they remained silent about him. Two or three narrators narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him (7/ 110). See al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's comment on this in "Lisan al-Mizan". Reference / Source: And al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 221 from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: And Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah" 1/ 342, Abdullah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (371), al-Mahamili in "al-Amali" (the narration of Ibn al-Bayyi' - 24), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (25/ 47), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7832), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 44/ 23, via Muhammad bin Ishaq. Technical note / Defect ('illah): And in the narration of Abdullah bin Ahmad, 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abdullah is left "unnamed" (mubham), and in his place the words "عَمَّنْ لَا يُتَّهَمُ" (from someone who is not suspected) are given.
