Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6935

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith al-Taymi that Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) left instructions that she be carried on the bier of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and that a funeral canopy (na'sh) be placed over it; before her, the bier of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) had also been carried on it. On a very hot day Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the grave-diggers who were preparing Sayyidah Zaynab's grave, and he said (for their comfort): "What if I were to pitch a tent over them (it would be better)." And this was the first tent put up over a grave in al-Baqi'.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is "talif" (ruined).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Sabrah is "muttaham" (accused of lying), although he has a corroboration (mutaba'ah); but the report is also "mursal".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (10/ 106, 109) narrated it in pieces (muqatta'an) via al-Waqidi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: The story of pitching the tent (fustat) over the grave was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq (6207) from Yahya bin al-'Ala', from Yazid bin 'Abd Allah bin Usamah, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith al-Taymi, who said: The first tent pitched over the grave of any of the Muslims was over the grave of Zaynab bint Jahsh, and it was a hot day.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (10/ 109) — the wording is his — Ibn Abi Shaybah (3/ 336) and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf" (472) narrated it by way of Abu Ma'shar from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, who said: 'Umar bin al-Khattab stood in the graveyard while the people were digging the grave of Zaynab bint Jahsh on a hot day, and he said: If only I could pitch a tent over them. So a tent was pitched over them.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ma'shar — whose name is Najih al-Sindi — is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The first part of this narration — about Zaynab's instruction concerning the bier — contradicts what Ibn Sa'd (10/ 108) and Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani in "al-Awa'il" (118) narrated through two routes from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Nafi' and others: Men and women used to go out with the dead together. When Zaynab bint Jahsh died, 'Umar ordered a caller to announce that none should go out for Zaynab except her close (mahram) relatives. Bint 'Umays said: O Commander of the Faithful, shall I not show you something I saw the Abyssinians do for their women? She made a bier (na'sh) and covered it with a cloth (a veiled litter). When 'Umar looked at it, he said: How excellent this is, and how concealing! Then he had a caller announce: Go out for your mother.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Al-Dhahabi erred in "al-Siyar" (2/ 212-213) by making it from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar.
