(1). It is narrated from Sufyan bin Uyaynah that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Ziyad! Who is the most knowledgeable of people?" He said: "You are, O Commander of the Believers." He said: "I firmly adjure you (to tell the truth)." He said: "Since you have firmly adjured me, then it is Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who is the most knowledgeable."

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but this chain is "mu'dal" (broken in the middle). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct wording from Sufyan (bin Uyaynah) is "ablagh" (most eloquent), not "a'lam" (most knowledgeable). Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Lalaka'i in "Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad" (2766) via Harun bin Ma'ruf, and Ibn Asakir (19/ 196) via al-Humaydi, both of them from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, who said: Mu'awiyah asked Ziyad: "Who is the most eloquent of people?" He said: "You, O Commander of the Believers." Mu'awiyah said: "I adjure you (to tell the truth)." He said: "If you adjure me, then it is Aishah." Mu'awiyah said: "Indeed, she never opened a door she wanted to close without closing it, and never closed a door she wanted to open without opening it (meaning she was supremely wise and resourceful)."
