It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away in my house, on my day, between my chest and my throat. Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) carrying a fresh tooth-stick. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at it (with longing), so I understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) needed it. I took the tooth-stick, chewed it to soften it, cleaned it, made it good and gave it to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) cleaned his teeth with it in the most beautiful manner. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to lift his hand, but it fell. I began to make for him (peace and blessings be upon him) the supplication that Jibril (peace be upon him) used to make for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and which he (peace and blessings be upon him) too used to recite when ill, but in that illness he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recite it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky and said: 'al-Rafiq al-A'la' (O Allah, I ask for the Highest Companion, that is, Your companionship), and his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed soul departed. So praise be to Allah, who joined my saliva with his (peace and blessings be upon him) on the last day of this world.
