It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have Abdullah bin Khatal brought out from behind the coverings of the Ka'bah and order him to be killed; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After this (the day of the Conquest of Makkah), no one from Quraysh shall be killed as a captive."

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to other reports), while this chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain Abu Ma'shar - whose name is Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi - is weak. And only two narrators narrated from Yusuf bin Ya'qub, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", so there is some unknownness (jahalah) about him. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6687) from Abdullah bin Ahmad, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Fakihi in "Akhbar Makkah" (770), al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1111), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (4243) and (8070), and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3484) through several routes from Muhammad bin Bakkar, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said: This hadith is not narrated from al-Sa'ib bin Yazid except with this chain; Abu Ma'shar is alone in narrating it. (2384). Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Baghawi (1112), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (8070), and Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 7/ 55 through the route of Mansur bin Abi Muzahim, and by Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" p. 743 through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr; both of them (Mansur and Yunus) narrate it from Abu Ma'shar with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The first part of this hadith is supported by the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (1846) and Muslim (1357): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered in the year of the Conquest (of Makkah) with a helmet (of iron) on his head. When he took it off, a man came and said: Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah. He said: Kill him." See also the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas which has already passed with the author at number (2384). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second part of this hadith is supported by the hadith of Muti' bin al-Aswad in Muslim (1782); he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of the Conquest of Makkah: "After this day, no Qurashi will be killed in captivity (sabran) until the Day of Resurrection." Note / Clarification: Al-Nawawi said in "Sharh Muslim" 12/ 134: The scholars have said that its meaning is to announce that the Quraysh would all accept Islam and none of them would apostatise, as others apostatised after him (peace and blessings be upon him) - those who were fought and killed in captivity. It does not mean that they would not be killed wrongfully or in captivity, for what befell the Quraysh after that is well known. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
